Coronation Street legend 'quits' one year after vanishing from ITV soap

Aggie first arrived on screen five years ago as the Bailey family moved into Weatherfield, but it has now been more than a year since the character was seen on-screen.

Coronation Street: Aggie expresses concern for Ronnie's arrival

Coronation Street star Lorna Laidlaw has reportedly quit her role as Aggie Bailey in the ITV soap. The actress, 61, last appeared on-screen more than a year ago and its thought she will not return to the cobbles.

Lorna is famed for playing receptionist Mrs Tembe in the the BBC One soap Doctor for eight year before moving over Corrie. She arrived in Weathrfield in 2019 as Aggie Bailey- the matriach of the soap's first regular black family.

But following an extended absence during the COVID pandemic, the actress returned for a devastating plot that saw her husband Ed Bailey (Trevor Georges) wreak havoc in their lives.

The family orginally hailed from the posh streets of Alderley Edge in Cheshire but moved to Weatherfield. Their first fall from grace was kept under wraps from their old pals as they moved into Sally and Tim's terraced house.

Following Ed's gambling addiction, Aggie moved to the Midlands to care for a sick relative. Her last appearance was on June 12, 2023, exactly three years on from her first.

Aggie's absence sparked Ed's addiction to worsen and he even faked a robbery. But earlier this year Ed went to visit his wife before returning home with bad news.

He announced that Aggie would not be returning and they had broken up after she gave him his marching orders, leaving Ed crestfallen as he returned to Weatherfield.

But away from Weatherfield, Lorna appears to have signed up for a role in Channel 5 drama The Good Ship Murder, making any Corrie comeback for the star unlikely.

Speaking about Lorna's departure from the ITV soap, a source told The Sun: "Lorna is a hugely talented actress and it’s a great gig to land.

"The show films in beautiful Malta and the cast and crew are a close knit group so it’s a really great atmosphere to work in."
