David Cameron 'defends' Rishi Sunak over D-Day controversy

Good Morning Britain viewers were less than impressed with hosts Ed Balls and Kate Garraway on Thursday morning. It comes after the two ITV presenters were speaking to David Cameron.

The pair were grilling the MP to get his thoughts on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak leaving the D-Day commemorations early last week. However, as Sunak has since apologised for his actions, fans begged the duo to move on from the subject.

It wasn’t long before viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the interview with many unhappy with the topic. @marktho35631130 fumed: “FFS, how long are you going to talk about D-Day. The guy has apologised and we need to move on.”

@sw2963 asked: “What happened last week was deplorable from Sunak to leave the D-Day Celebrations but can we move on and grill David Cameron on their poor record.”

@JULIEGRANT20 said: “@GMB you are wasting too much air time on what the @RishiSunak should have done. Let’s hear about what he plans to do. @David_Cameron must be as fed up with your interview today as viewers are. Let’s move on, please."

@MaryMos51375998 commented: “Absolutely terrible interview this morning by Kate Garaway with lord http://Cameron.How much longer are you going to keep going on about D day he’s apologised profusely what more do you want blood. This is the distraction that Labour are relishing in.”

@IzzyFreeman5 added: “Why are we still going on and on about this? Yawn!”

With @TheGers5 asking: “How many times will you talk on this?”

During the conversation, Cameron defended the Prime Minister’s decision to leave early.

GMB KATE

He commented: “To be fair to Rishi, he went to the key event in Portsmouth with all of the D-Day veterans in the UK and then he went to the key event above the British Normandy beaches, which again is a beautiful event and he met lots of veterans.

“Then he left to go back to the UK and immediately said he made a mistake and he wished he’d stayed. I think we should leave it there.”

However, the host wasn’t satisfied with Cameron’s dismissal as she highlighted that as she was there herself, she didn’t want to leave.

Kate said: “That’s the problem, isn’t it? That people don’t understand why he wanted to leave and why he considered anything else at that point.”

RISHI SUNAK

Although she applauded the MP for defending Sunak, she questioned if he could share his honest gut feelings about him leaving early.

He replied: “I think these events are magnificent the older the D-Day veterans get, the more moving it is to hear from them.”

Cameron told the two hosts it was moving to hear veteran stories as he emphasised that the day is about them. He added: “That’s why I think we should continue to make it about them.”

However, Kate cut in stating the only reason it’s not about them at the moment is because the Prime Minister left early not to be with them.

The MP hit back: “He immediately said he wished he had stayed. But, he did go to the acolyte key British event.”

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am.
