Ed Balls shakes head as Kate Garraway continues with debate

Eagle-eyed Good Morning Britain viewers spotted some tension between Ed Balls and Kate Garraway on Thursday morning. The duo were fronting the ITV show together as they discussed the recent election debate between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.

As the pair were discussing the topic with their guests Guto Harri and Ayesha Hazarika, Kate cut into the conversation. Although it was clear Ed was less than impressed with her interrupting them as the camera cut to Ed shaking his head.

The moment didn’t go unnoticed with people watching as @NicolaJaneFros1 tweeted: “@edballs smug and disproving facial expressions because of @kategarraway asking a question at the same time is surely not what @GMB wants broadcasting live to the nation??”

Also catching the moment, @Toni04552481391added: “Loved how Ed was caught raising his eyebrows to the camera when Garraway kept talking over him.”

@realgmg67 quipped: “If I was Ed Balls? I'd go home, It's the Kate Show yet again. They've got Charlotte Hawkins.” @e_thornburrow reeled: “@GMB had to switch off again this morning and put bbc on. I'm not a fan of Kate Garraway.”

However, some people were thrilled to see Kate back on-screen with Ed as @bigJacksma123 commented: “I quite like him and Kate.”

During the show, the pair spoke to Labour's National campaign coordinator Pat McFadden after Starmer refused to rule out all tax rises in the latest Leaders' debate.

Ed asked: “To unpack where we are on tax from last night’s debate with the manifesto coming up. There’s no need to raise taxes to fund anything in your manifesto beyond the tax rises you’ve increased.

“You’re promising not to raise income tax VAT or national insurance but you’re not saying today that you won’t raise capital gains tax or council tax or fuel duty or any other taxes. Those aren’t manifesto promises?”

McFadden told the presenters that Labour’s manifesto will include what Starmer detailed in the debate on Wednesday night.

He added: “No increase in income tax, no increase in VAT or national insurance.

“A crucial fourth point which is, there is nothing in the manifesto, nothing in the plans that we publish today, that will require further tax increases, that’s the position-”

However, he was soon cut off as Kate interrupted him mid-sentence to ask a question.

She commented: “Sorry to interrupt, he also didn’t say, he wasn’t clear about a potential rise in capital gains tax, in fuel duty for instance and other tax in other areas.

“So, are you saying that that’s what the manifesto is going to be? A guarantee on those specific areas but no guarantees on the others? So are you clarifying that?”

McFadden told Kate that nothing in the manifesto requires any further increases in tax.

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV from 6am.
