EXCLUSIVE: Jay Slater's mysterious disappearance prompted Lancashire Police to offer its support to the Guardia Civil but Spanish cops rejected the assistance.

The investigation into the disappearance of 19-year-old Jay Slater could continue for "several weeks", a spokesperson for the Guardia Civil in Santa Cruz de Tenerife told the Daily Express.

The Lancashire native mysteriously disappeared after a night spent at the New Rave Generation music festival on the Spanish island on June 17.

A massive search mission is underway as local authorities explore "several lines of investigation" to locate the missing teen.

The spokesperson said: "From the beginning, there have been several lines of investigation that have not been ruled out, but obviously no details have been given to the public.

"I don't even know these lines of investigation, but there are several. The search for the boy continues. It is not known when the search will stop, as it depends on the investigators in charge of the case."

They added: "It could stop this afternoon or in several weeks. I don't know. The search is concentrated in Masca, the area surrounding the village, which is not small, and the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, which is full of ravines."

The Guardia Civil has also announced a new search operation for Jay on Saturday, urging volunteers to join in.

The search mission will begin at 9am on Saturday in the Masca area where Jay was last seen on June 17.

Slater was reported missing after a frantic call to pal Lucy Law saying he was lost in the "middle of nowhere" and had injured his leg, saying his phone was running out of battery.

A missing persons report was filed half an hour after the call at 9 am, with the Guardia Civil in Tenerife immediately launching a massive search and rescue mission.

Police started searching the area around the 2,000ft Masca ravine four days after Jay was reported missing.

Lancashire Police at the time offered to join in the search efforts but they were declined – a move the boy's mother, Debbie, criticised.

Earlier this week she launched a heartbreaking appeal for information about her son's whereabouts.

She said: "It's been a week now and it's been awful. I've barely slept and I'm at my wits' end.

"The Spanish police are doing a good job and we are getting updated from the consulate so we just put our faith in them."

Debbie also confirmed part of the money collected via a GoFundMe page set up by Ms Law after Jay's disappearance would be withdrawn to help fund the search effort.

She added cash would also be used to cover her and her family's expenses as they extended their stay in Tenerife while officials continue looking for the 19-year-old.
