Some of the holiday destinations most loved by British tourists have, in recent years, experienced long and blistering heatwaves.

In April last year, an extraordinary spring heatwave swept across Portugal and mainland Spain, with temperatures reaching 38.8C in Cordoba, a landlocked city in Andalusia.

Similar extremes were witnessed in Morocco, where many locations saw the mercury hit 40C.

The hot temperatures continued into the summer and engulfed more and more holiday hotspots including the Italian island of Sicily, where on August 11 last year the city of Syracuse was hit by 48.8C, and Greece, with Athens among other cities experiencing temperatures beyond 40C.

The trend appears to be repeating this year, with Spain enduring a long drought and seeing temperatures already rising to well over 30C in several parts of the country.

Mexico, another nation welcoming many British tourists, is currently in the grip of its third heatwave since March 17, with two more already forecasted to happen by July.

The temperatures are set to reach 40C in Tabasco and 40.5C in Mexicali this week, while in Mexico City the mercury could hit a record 35C over the next two weeks, according to experts.

Issues linked to the weather, including dehydration and heat strokes, have killed 22 people in Mexico between May 12 and 21 alone, bringing the total of heat-related deaths since the beginning of the hot season to 48.

The Express is now asking its readers whether similar heat trends are going to affect their decisions when planning for a holiday.

Those thinking of ditching the Mediterranean for cooler holiday hotspots could consider northern European destinations such as Oslo, Norway's capital.

There, on warm summer days, it is possible to dive into the Sørenga seawater pool and enjoy alfresco meals.
