Saddleworth Moor fire RECAP: Smoke seen for miles as 'keep windows closed' warning issued

Seven fire engines have been dispatched to a moorland fire on Tuesday afternoon. Horror footage shows thick smoke rising from Saddleworth Moor near Greenfield.
The "large fire", as described by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, prompted warnings to residents to keep their doors and windows closed. A message on X from the service reads: "Our crews are tackling a large fire on Saddleworth Moor near Greenfield. Please avoid the area while crews tackle the blaze. Residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed." Two other fires are raging near Greater Manchester - in Marsen Moor, near Deer Hill and Five Mile Post.

Road closure in place
Huddersfield Road is closed between Delph and Marsden due to wildfires in the Uppermill, Diggle, and Marsden Moor areas.
Fourth moorland fire raging
Firefighters are now tackling another blaze near Uppermill in Oldham, which is understood to be separate from the fires elsewhere.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "Shortly after 2:20pm this afternoon (Tuesday 7 March), five fire engines were called to a moorland fire at Knowl Top Lane in Uppermill, Oldham.
"Firefighter crews arrived quickly at the scene to tackle the blaze. Crews remain in attendance and are using specialist equipment, including a forced air fan unit, to contain the fire.
"Firefighters have been in attendance for around three hours and 15 minutes and are still at the scene, working with colleagues from the National Trust to make the area safe."
'Avoid the area and expect road closures'
A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said in a new statement: "10 crews remain at both scenes on Marsden Moor, covering Deer Hill and the Five Mile Post areas, supported by specialist wildfire teams.
"Members of the public should continue to avoid the area and expect road closures in the surrounding area while crews work to bring both wildfires under control."

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said in a new statement: "10 crews remain at both scenes on Marsden Moor, covering Deer Hill and the Five Mile Post areas, supported by specialist wildfire teams.
"Members of the public should continue to avoid the area and expect road closures in the surrounding area while crews work to bring both wildfires under control."
Fire service issues statement
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 2.15pm today (Tuesday 7 April, seven fire engines from across Greater Manchester were called to a moorland fire on Saddleworth Moor near Greenfield.
"Firefighters arrived quickly to tackle the blaze and make the area safe. Crews remain in attendance and are currently damping down the area."
Third fire breaks out
A third fire has broken out on Saddleworth Moor this afternoon, with the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service in attendance at the incident just off Holmfirth Road.
