Eid Al-Fitr celebrations have begun for thousands of Muslims around the world - including those living in the UK. Eid marks the end of Ramadan, the ninth month in the lunar calendar followed by Islam. Many UK Muslims look out for the Moroccan moon sighting to establish when Eid begins, while others follow the verdict on sightings coming from Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam.

Experts in both countries declared earlier this week that Eid Al-Fitr would begin on March 20. Not all Muslims, however, have already ended their month of dawn-to-dusk fasting. In Pakistan, for example, Eid A-Fitr will begin on Saturday. Those who have already started celebrating the end of Ramadan often greet others with "Eid Mubarak", which means "blessed festival".

How to greet someone on Eid al-Fitr

People who want to greet someone celebrating Eid can say "Eid Mubarak" which means "Blessed Eid".

Alternatively, you can also wish a "Happy Eid".

Why doesn't Ramadan fall on the same period every year?

Islam follows the lunar calendar, which is based on the phases of the Moon, rather than the solar calendar, with fixed seasons.

Ramadan starts in its ninth month, followed by Shawwal.

If the Islamic months were based on the solar calendar, people living in certain parts of the world would always have Ramadan in summer, making their dawn-to-dusk fasting several hours longer than that of Muslims in other parts of the world.

By following the lunar calendar, every Muslim experiences fasting in different seasons.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy wishes Muslims across the globe

Ukrainian leader wrote on X: "Eid Mubarak to all Muslims in Ukraine and around the world.

"For communities in Ukraine, this year’s Eid al-Fitr is still marked by the full-scale war, now in its fifth year. We remember, however, that Russian aggression began back in 2014 with the Russians once again seizing homes and imposing repression on many of our citizens, particularly on the Crimean Tatar people. Many of our compatriots are forced to celebrate this holiday under occupation, with hundreds of political prisoners and thousands of captives remaining in Russian prisons on fabricated charges.

"Unfortunately, the war also continues in the Middle East region, with a far-reaching impact on countries across the globe. Appalling strikes by the Iranian regime, carried out with drones and missiles, are hitting peaceful cities, infrastructure, and people – precisely during the holy month of Ramadan.

"For Ukrainians, who also endure such challenges every day, it is crucial that terror does not prevail anywhere in the world and that life is well-defended in every region. That is why we immediately offered our security partnership to the countries facing these attacks, and our teams are already on the ground working to strengthen the protection of life.

"As Ramadan comes to an end, I wish above all peace, strength, and prosperity to all Muslim families. May this holiday bring blessings and strengthen faith and cooperation among those who defend life. May peace come closer to everyone!

Eid Mubarak!"

What happens during the Moon Sighting?

On the 29th night of Ramadan, Muslims gather shortly after sunset to look for the thin new crescent moon, known as the hilal.

If the crescent is spotted, it signals the end of Ramadan and Eid is celebrated the following day.

If the moon isn’t visible—whether because it hasn’t appeared yet or due to cloudy skies—Ramadan continues to a full 30 days, and Eid is observed the day after.

Depending on the country, the sighting may be carried out by official committees, astronomers, or local volunteers, with some communities relying on direct observation and others using astronomical calculations to guide the decision.

When is Eid-Al-Fitr in the UK?

UK's New Crescent Society posted on Facebook and said: "NEW CRESCENT SOCIETY – MOON NOT SEEN. RAMADAN HAS 30 DAYS. 1 SHAWWAL = SATURDAY 21 MARCH. EID IS ON SATURDAY (LOCAL SIGHTING).

"We had moonsighters around the country – Cardiff, Exeter, Bristol, Southampton, London, Oxford, Birmingham, Leicester, Derby, Bolton, Preston, Liverpool, Bradford, Leeds, Sheffield, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Jersey Islands and many more!

"Thank you to all of you who were looking for the moon – we had great gatherings and an incredible feeling of reviving the sunnah. However as the moon was not seen in the UK by the eyes, those who follow local sighting will do Eid on Saturday."

The Embassy of Russia in Pakistan shared a statement on X from Vladimir Putin: "Eid al-Fitr Greetings from Russian President Vladimir Putin

"On the blessed conclusion of the Holy Month of Ramadan, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on Eid al-Fitr to all Muslims in Russia.

"This blessed festival has, for centuries, served as a mirror reflecting moral excellence, mercy, goodwill, and mutual compassion for the faithful, while keeping them connected to the eternal traditions of Islamic values.

"Muslims in Russia hold the historical and spiritual legacy of their ancestors in the highest esteem and reverence, and they celebrate this blessed festival with sincerity and devotion in their communities and families. During the holy month, the organisation of large-scale charitable, cultural, educational, and special events for children has become an admirable and enduring tradition.

Muslim organisations are playing a commendable role in strengthening the family system and the effective upbringing of the younger generation. They are engaged in constructive cooperation and dialogue with state and public institutions and remain consistently active in initiatives based on patriotism, education and training, and human compassion."

In the statement, Putin seemingly referred also to the unlawful Russian invasion of Ukraine.

He said: "I express my heartfelt gratitude in particular to those followers of Islam who, alongside their comrades-in-arms, are fighting on the front lines for the freedom and independence of the Russian Motherland, as well as to all those who are devoted to supporting and caring for the families and loved ones of our heroes.

"I wish you all complete health, pride, and prosperity."

Prayers 'for God to stop the war'

In a school that is sheltering hundreds of people in Beirut, Lebanon’s capital, some tried to recapture a taste of Ramadan traditions and the lives they left behind, according to the Associated Press.

Among those living at the school was Shaker Araqa, who lamented how his extended family has been dispersed by this war.

“We used to gather,” he said. “Now, everyone is in a different place.”

Nabila Hijazi, who is also living at the school with her children, say they keep asking her about the holiday.

“They want to live their lives,” she said. “We tell them ‘God Willing, Eid comes and we return to our homes.’”

In Sidon, Jamaan said she prays “for God to stop the war, for us to return to our homes and for there to be peace.”

On Eid, Muslims will follow the way of Prophet Muhammad, also known as “Sunnah”. Specific Sunnahs to follow on Eid include:

Afghanistan only country to celebrate today

The only country known to be celebrating Eid ul Fitr 2026 today (Thursday, March 19), is Afghanistan.

Calls for greater accuracy after 'false moon sightings'

An expert has called for greater accuracy when determining the date of Eid al-Fitr 2026.

His message comes as Afghanistan celebrates Eid today despite sightings that were "not possible."

Dr Zahid Nawaz said: "Whilst the world is concerned with the challenging global events, the moonsighting discussions are back. It has become too fashionable for people to cite codes and show visibility maps.

"But we must go beyond that. Actual moonsighting considers the crescent in its totality: age of the moon, lag time, crescent illumination, altitude, and elongation. Predictions alone cannot guarantee an actual sighting, as local conditions and observer expertise play a key role."

"Our UK moonsighters will [also] search for the moon on Thursday. We are in a similar position to Morocco with a moon which is extremely difficult to see. Therefore, we expect Eid to be on Saturday, March 21."

What time will local mosques announce Eid?

Some masjids will have already announced the time for their Eid prayers.

However, many others are waiting until this evening.

This is because they follow either the moon sightings in the UK or Morocco, or Saudi Arabia instead.

People in the UK can expect an announcement from 18:30.

Reminders issued for Zakat al-Fitr ahead of Eid

Muslims are being reminded to pay Zakat al-Fitr, a compulsory charitable donation given at the end of Ramadan before the special Eid al-Fitr prayer. The payment is intended to support those in need so they can also take part in the celebrations marking the end of the fasting month.

Zakat al-Fitr is usually given in the final days of Ramadan and must be paid before attending Eid prayers, ensuring that vulnerable people are able to buy food and celebrate the festival. The tradition reflects the wider emphasis in Islam on charity, community support and sharing joy with others during religious occasions.

How is Eid al-Fitr celebrated?

On the morning of Eid al-Fitr, many Muslims wake early to prepare for special congregational prayers held at mosques or large outdoor venues. After a month of fasting during Ramadan, Muslims are not permitted to fast on Eid, making the day one of celebration and relief.

Some people also observe traditional practices linked to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, known as the Sunnah. These can include bathing before prayers, wearing their best clothes or perfume, reciting praises to God on the way to the prayer gathering, and sometimes taking a different route home afterwards.

The festival is marked by family visits, festive meals and community gatherings, with people greeting one another with "Eid Mubarak," meaning "blessed festival." Children may receive gifts or money - often called Eidi - while many families share sweets and traditional dishes to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

New Crescent Society offers tips for spotting Eid crescent

The New Crescent Society is a UK-based organisation that promotes local moon sightings to help determine key Islamic dates such as Ramadan and Eid. The group coordinates volunteers across the country to observe the new crescent and share confirmed reports.

Ahead of Eid al-Fitr, the society has issued guidance for observers planning to look for the Shawwal moon after sunset, as sightings will determine whether Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days and when the festival will begin.

Eid preparations under way around the world

Preparations for Eid al-Fitr are under way in many parts of the world, with volunteers and worshippers getting prayer sites ready ahead of the celebrations. In Myanmar, Muslim communities have been seen preparing the Surtee Sunni Idgah prayer ground in Yangon, where large numbers of people are expected to gather for special Eid prayers.

Such preparations are common in the final days of Ramadan, as mosques and open prayer areas are cleaned and organised to accommodate worshippers. The work reflects wider efforts by communities globally to get ready for the festival marking the end of the fasting month.

Nigeria confirms Eid al-Fitr date after moon not sighted

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared that Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, 2026, following the non-sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon on the 29th day of Ramadan. As a result, Muslims in Nigeria will complete 30 days of fasting before marking the festival.

Nigeria issues its own Eid announcements based on verified local moon sightings, rather than automatically following rulings from countries such as Saudi Arabia. The decision was confirmed by the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs and the National Moon Sighting Committee, which said no credible sightings were reported nationwide.

Fallowfield councillor Ali Ilyas has commented on the cancellation of the Platt Fields Park Eid prayer event. How is Eid al-Fitr celebrated?

Early in the morning, Muslims prepare food and get ready to attend Eid prayers at their local mosques.

After a month of fasting, eating during daylight hours can feel unusual, yet fasting on Eid al‑Fitr is actually prohibited in Islam.

On Eid, as on any day, Muslims strive to follow the example of Prophet Muhammad, known in Islam as the Sunnah.

Specific Sunnahs on Eid include:

Taking a bath or shower Wearing one’s best clothes and perfume Saying “Takbeer” or praising God on the way to Eid prayers Taking a different route home from attending Eid prayer

Muslims will hug their friends and family and greet them with “Eid Mubarak,” meaning “blessed festival” in Arabic.

Eid mass prayer confirmed by Dubai Media Office

The Dubai Media Office has confirmed all of the nitty gritty details for tomorrow's mass Eid Al Fitr prayer, held across 900 mosques.

See below for more detail.

Manchester Eid event cancelled due to soggy soil

Manchester's massive outdoor Eid-al-Fitr celebration has been cancelled at the eleventh hour after a washout winter has left the ground unusable.

Council bosses and the organisers of Eid in the Park confirmed that sodden conditions at Platt Fields Park are simply too soft to cope with the hundreds of vehicles needed for the event.

The funfair will still go ahead, running from noon til 6pm Friday - Sunday.

Indoor Eid prayers for UAE major city mosques

In a rare move, authorities in the UAE have also announced that all Eid prayers must take place inside mosques only. The traditional large, open-air musallas - or prayer grounds - will not be used this year to allow for better crowd management and security.

If you're in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, here's what you need to know before heading out for Eid.

Check Live FeedsBefore heading out, check the official Instagram or X (Twitter) accounts for Visit Dubai or Abu Dhabi Events, with situations often evolving quickly and with little notice

Focus on Indoor FestivitiesMalls like Dubai Mall and Yas Mall remain open and are focusing on indoor cultural performances and decorations rather than outdoor spectacles

Expect Heightened SecurityYou will notice an increased presence of security and civil defence at major hubs—this is standard procedure given the current high alert status across the UAE.

UAE Eid fireworks cancelled in Abu Dhabi

While official cancellation notices for Abu Dhabi's Corniche and Yas Bay are being handled on a day-to-day basis, major tourism and leisure operators have been told to take a step back from pyrotechnic displays for 2026.

It is likely these will be replaced by quieter, ground-based light show, if they are not cancelled last-minute.The emirates of Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah have confirmed they will not host Eid fireworks this year.

UAE Eid fireworks cancelled in Dubai

Due to the escalating conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, the UAE has scaled back its firework celebrations for Eid al-Fitr 2026. This is a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and prioritise national security.

Several of the most popular fireworks destinations have officially cancelled their shows and, in some cases, closed their doors entirely:

Global Village: Closed indefinitely. All fireworks and drone shows are cancelled.Dubai Parks and Resorts (Riverland): Operations are suspended; all fireworks are cancelled.Ain Dubai: Remains closed until further notice.Al Seef: Displays have been called off in line with the government directive

Eid traditions around the world: Pakistan, India, Bangladesh

In Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, the excitement peaks the night before Eid, known as Chaand Raat, or the Night of the Moon.

Markets stay open until dawn as women crowd stalls to have their hands decorated with intricate Mehendi - or henna - designs and buy colorful glass bangles.

On the day itself, the star of the show is Sheer Khurma, a creamy vermicelli pudding with dates and nuts, which is served to every guest who stops by to offer their holiday greetings.

Eid turns into four-day mega weekend for UAE

Residents in the United Arab Emirates are gearing up for a sun-soaked four-day public holiday starting from tomorrow as nationwide Eid celebrations get into full swing.

Under UAE law, the first three days of the Hijri month of Shawwal are official holidays, marking out 20-22 March as the nation’s formal Eid Al Fitr dates. Authorities confirmed that celebrations will officially kick off on Friday (20 March), after the new moon crescent was not sighted on Thursday evening.

As a massive added bonus, with Ramadan lasting the full 30 days this year, the final day of the fast is also treated as a bank holiday. Because Eid falls across the weekend, it has created a bumper four-day "mega weekend" for Emirati residents, starting today, Thursday (19 March). Talk about a Ramadan Mubarak — or رمضان مبارك — for 2026!

Eid traditions around the world: Turkey

Known as Ramazan Bayramı or Şeker Bayramı, which means Sugar Feast, the Turkish celebration is a paradise for those with a sweet tooth.

Children go door-to-door in their neighborhoods to wish elders a happy holiday, receiving hand-kissed blessings and rewards of baklava, Turkish delight, or chocolates.

It is a deeply respectful time where the youngest family members visit the oldest, ensuring that the bonds of lineage and community remain "sweet" for the coming year.

Qatar welcomes temporary truce

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: The State of Qatar welcomes the announcement of a temporary truce between Afghanistan and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr, considering this step a positive gesture that contributes to de-escalation and promotes calm between the two sides.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms the State of Qatar's hope that this temporary truce will pave the way for a return to a sustainable ceasefire agreement, one that spares civilian lives and achieves security and stability."

Eid traditions around the world: Iceland

Eid al-Fitr in Iceland is less of a public spectacle than elsewhere in the world and is instead more of an intimate, indoor celebration.

Since the community includes people from across the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, the food is a spectacular fusion. You’ll find Icelandic smoked lamb (Hangikjöt) on the same table as Moroccan tagines, Pakistani biryani, and Turkish delights.

Class in glass: A more modern Icelandic tradition involves families booking large Eid Brunches at Reykjavik’s glass-walled hotels. It’s a chic way to celebrate whist remaining warm and out of the March winds.

The "Kósýheit" (Cozy) Vibe: March in Iceland is still very cold. Eid celebrations often mirror the Icelandic concept of kósýheit—think heavy wool sweaters, geothermal pool visits with the kids, and plenty of hot coffee and sweets.

Giving Back: Charity (Zakat al-Fitr) is a key theme to Eid. The community often coordinates donations to help local refugees in Reykjavik, ensuring the holiday spirit and cheer spreads far and wide.

Ramadan traditions around the world: Iceland

Now here is an interesting one. Celebrating Ramadan and Eid in Iceland is a unique experience defined by the nation's extreme northern geography which has a dramatic impact on the daylight hours - and therefore fasting times.

As of Thursday (March 19) the Muslim community in Iceland is currently marking the final day of Ramadan, with Eid al-Fitr expected to begin tomorrow (March 20).

Mecca Time: As 2026's Ramadan fell in February and March, fasting hours were relatively moderate (around 13 to 16 hours). However, when Ramadan falls in mid-summer, the "Midnight Sun" means the sun barely sets, forcing the community to choose between following local light or "Mecca time."

The "Fatwa" Choice: Most of the roughly 1,500 Muslims in Reykjavik follow one of three timings: local sunrise/sunset, the timings of the 45th parallel (usually equivalent to Northern France), or Saudi Arabian time.

Community Iftars: Because the community is small, breaking the fast (Iftar) is a deeply communal event. The Grand Mosque of Reykjavik often hosts nightly meals where Icelandic lamb is served alongside traditional dates, lentil soup, and dishes from over 30 different cultures.

Eid traditions around the world: USA

In the US, where Muslims make up an ethnically and racially diverse minority, many come together for Eid prayers and for festivals featuring fun activities for children and families.

According to AP, these often include such things as face painting and balloon twisting.

Eid traditions around the world: Egypt

In Egypt, families partake in Eid prayers together. Many people visit relatives, friends or neighbors and some travel to vacation spots. Children, usually wearing new Eid outfits, receive traditional cash gifts known as “eidiya.”

Making or buying Eid cookies dusted with powdered sugar is another fixture of marking the holiday in the country.

Eid traditions around the world: Malaysia

Muslims in Malaysia also have a homecoming tradition for Eid. The first day usually begins with a morning prayer in the mosque, seeking forgiveness from family and friends, and visiting loved ones’ graves.

Neighbourhoods adopt an “open house” mentality that sees friends and families trading visits to celebrate Eid and enjoy traditional delicacies. Older Muslims give money in green packets to children and guests who visit their homes.

Saudi kingdom welcomes Eid truce

Eid traditions around the world: Indonesia

In Indonesia, many embark on an exodus to their home villages to celebrate the holiday with loved ones in a homecoming tradition. People pour out of major cities en masse across the archipelago in order to return to villages to celebrate the holiday with prayers and family gatherings.

Before the holiday, popular markets typically teem with shoppers buying clothes, shoes, cookies and sweet treats.

Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq officially announce Friday as Eid al-Fitr Day

Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq have officially announced that Friday, March 20, will be the day of Eid al-Fitr.

Why some Muslims take a different route home after prayers

Some Muslims observe a long-standing Eid tradition of travelling to the special morning prayers by one route and returning home using a different path. The practice is based on teachings attributed to the Prophet Muhammad

"On the Day of Eid, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to return after offering the Eid prayer through a way different from that by which he went."

Some Islamic scholars say the tradition may have practical and symbolic meanings, such as allowing worshippers to meet more members of the community, exchange greetings and share the joy of the festival.

What does Eid al-Fitr mean?

Eid al-Fitr means "the festival of breaking the fast", bringing the holy month of Ramadan to a close. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, focusing on prayer, reflection and acts of charity.

For Muslims, Eid al-Fitr is a day of joy and celebration following the completion of Ramadan, during which they fast from dawn until sunset in an act of faith and devotion. The occasion is typically marked by special Eid prayers, spending time with family and friends, and sharing festive meals.

The festival is also seen as a time for Muslims to show gratitude for their blessings while remembering those who are less fortunate. Many people give to charity so that others can take part in the celebrations, and the day is often accompanied by continued worship and reflection.

Bahrain, Quatar, Kuwait and Turkey confirm March 20 as first day of Eid al-Fitr

Bahrain, Quatar, Kuwait and Turkey have all confirmed Friday, March 20, as the first day of Eid Al Fitr 1447 AH.

Their decisions were made after the Shawwal crescent was not seen on Wednesday in these areas, means that Eid will be celebrated after 30 days of Ramadan.

Australia confirms Eid al-Fitr date

Muslim organisations in Australia have confirmed the date of Eid al-Fitr 2026, with the Australian National Imams Council and the Australian Fatwa Council announcing that the festival will be marked on Friday, March 20. The bodies said their decision was based on astronomical calculations relating to the birth and visibility of the new crescent moon rather than physical sightings.

In a statement, they said:

"The method by which the Grand Mufti of Australia and the Australian Fatwa Council determined the end of the month of Ramadan, the first day of Shawwal, and the day of Eid Al-Fitr is based on the calculated birth of the moon before sunset, the duration of the moonset after sunset, and the possibility of sighting the moon in Australia and its surrounding region. This is a method that has been adopted by many prominent and reputable global scholarly councils.

"The Australian National Imams Council and the Australian Fatwa Council acknowledge, understand and respect the Imams and scholars who may hold a different opinion, and request all Muslims to respect the different opinions on this matter and work towards the unity of the Muslim community in preserving the common values and interests that they all have and share.

“The Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, and the member Imams of the Australian National Imams Council, wish the Muslim community a happy, joyful and blessed Eid Al-Fitr."

UAE to hold Eid prayers inside mosques amid regional tensions

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have said Eid al-Fitr prayers will be held inside mosques only as a precautionary safety measure, amid heightened regional tensions. Reports indicate the move comes as Gulf countries increase security arrangements due to ongoing conflict involving Iran, with officials aiming to reduce large outdoor gatherings.

The decision means traditional open-air Eid prayer grounds will not be used this year, with worshippers instead expected to attend prayers at designated mosques across the country. Officials have said the measure is intended to help protect public safety during the festival period.

Nigeria still awaits final confirmation

Despite the announcement in Saudi Arabia, Muslims in Nigeria are still waiting for an official statement from the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who traditionally confirms the end of Ramadan based on verified local moon sightings.

Earlier, the Sultan called on Muslims across the country to look out for the new crescent on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the 29th day of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar.

What will Eid al-Fitr celebrations involve?

Eid al-Fitr celebrations usually begin with special morning prayers held at mosques or large outdoor venues, where Muslims gather to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. People often wear new or their best clothes for the occasion and spend time greeting friends, neighbours and members of the wider community.

The day is also centred around family gatherings and festive meals, with traditional dishes and sweets shared throughout the celebrations. Children may receive gifts or money, often known as “Eidi,” while many adults exchange presents or visit relatives they may not have seen during Ramadan.

Charity is another key part of Eid. Muslims are encouraged to give Zakat al-Fitr, a donation intended to help those in need take part in the festivities. Community events, fairs and public celebrations may also take place in towns and cities, making Eid both a religious and social occasion.

Official date announced

Saudi authorities have confirmed the date of Eid al-Fitr 2026 after attempts to sight the Shawwal crescent moon were unsuccessful.

The kingdom’s Supreme Court announced that the moon was not seen anywhere in Saudi Arabia, meaning the holy month of Ramadan will complete 30 days.

As a result, Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, in line with the official ruling.

Saudi Arabia moon sighting 'not possible' due to cloudy conditions

Cloudy conditions in Sudair make it impossible to see Shawwal crescent moon.

Chief Astronomer Abdullah Al Khudairi said:

"The crescent moon will set this evening 30 minutes before the sun, and it will not be possible to observe it."

This would mean Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court is expected to confirm that the crescent moon has not been sighted, resulting in Ramadan continuing for one more day before Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on Friday, March 20.

Such an outcome would be consistent with international astronomical calculations on moon visibility and would also align with the country’s pre-published calendar, which has already forecast Eid on that date.

Sadiq Khan shares picture of London lights celebrating Ramadan

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, shared a picture of a West End street today on social media.

What if the Shawwal moon is not seen today?

If the crescent moon is not seen today, Ramadan will continue for one more day.

The month is then completed as 30 days, and Eid al-Fitr is celebrated the following day instead.

Why is the moon important for Eid al-Fitr?

The moon is significant for Eid al-Fitr because the festival begins when the new crescent moon is sighted, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims fast throughout Ramadan, and the appearance of the Shawwal crescent signals that the period of fasting has finished and celebrations can begin.

Religious authorities and local moon-sighting groups observe the sky after sunset on the 29th day of Ramadan to determine whether the crescent is visible. If it is seen, Eid takes place the following day. If not, Ramadan continues for one more day before the festival is held.

This tradition reflects the importance of the lunar Islamic calendar, which is based on the phases of the moon rather than fixed dates, meaning Eid al-Fitr falls on a different day each year in the Gregorian calendar

If Eid is on Friday, do you need to pray twice? UAE scholars clarify

The UAE Council for Fatwa has clarified what Muslims should do if Eid al-Fitr falls on a Friday, following public inquiries about prayer obligations. In guidance issued this week, the council said both the Eid prayer and the weekly Friday congregational prayer should be performed, with each taking place at its prescribed time.

The council said the majority scholarly view is that attending Eid prayer does not replace the obligation to attend Friday prayer, which remains compulsory. However, it added that some scholars allow those who attend Eid prayers to instead perform the regular Dhuhr prayer at home, although attending Friday prayer is considered preferable to avoid differences of opinion.

It also confirmed that Friday prayers will continue to be held in mosques across the UAE if the two occasions coincide, and encouraged Muslims to make the most of the final days of Ramadan through worship, charity and strengthening family and community ties.

Eid ul Fitr 2026 date announced - North America

The date of Eid al-Fitr 2026 has been declared for the United States and much of North America by the Fiqh Council of North America, based on astronomical calculations. The organisation said the new lunar month of Shawwal is expected to begin on Friday, March 20, although the exact date may still vary across the continent as some Islamic groups make their own rulings.

In a statement, the council said:

"The Astronomical New Moon is on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at 1:23 Universal Time… Hence first day of Shawwal is on Friday, March 20, 2026."

The decision was based on predictions that the faint crescent would be visible across much of North America later that day, including areas on both the east and west coasts.

Astronomers have also indicated that sightings with the naked eye should be possible in many parts of the region if weather conditions are clear. However, differences in moon-sighting methods mean some Muslim communities may still choose to celebrate Eid on a different day.

Will day of Eid al-Fitr will vary by country?

Because the sighting of the moon can vary depending on geography and weather conditions, the date of Eid is often different from one country to another.

Many Muslims around the world look to announcements from Saudi Arabia as a key reference. However, some countries, such as Morocco, operate their own official moon-sighting systems, and Muslims elsewhere - including in the UK - may choose to follow those decisions instead.

As a result, Eid could be observed on different days, with some celebrating on Thursday, others on Friday, and some possibly on Saturday.

Saudi Arabia prepares for Eid moon sighting

A social media post from The Holy Mosques account is among many updates being shared online about preparations in Saudi Arabia for the official search for the Shawwal crescent moon, which will determine the date of Eid al-Fitr.

The post said the results of the moon sighting are expected to be announced at around 6:10pm local time in Makkah Saudi Arabia. Images shared online appear to show telescopes and observation equipment set up as teams prepare to look for the new crescent after sunset.

Saudi Supreme Court calls for moon sightings

It has been confirmed that Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court has called for moon-sighting observations to take place today, Wednesday, March 18. The date marks the 29th day of Ramadan in the Kingdom - the traditional time when sightings are carried out to determine whether the current month will end and the next will begin.

Ramadan is followed by Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar, which starts with the festival of Eid al-Fitr. Celebrations typically last for up to three days.

Eid moon sighting latest as Abu Dhabi crescent photo shared online

A photograph of the Ramadan crescent taken in Abu Dhabi has been widely shared on social media. This has prompted speculation that the date of Eid al-Fitr has already been confirmed.

However, experts say the image - captured earlier on Wednesday by an astronomical observatory - does not amount to an official religious moon sighting. Such sightings are typically confirmed after sunset by authorised committees in countries including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Do Muslims give gifts on Eid? Eid al-Fitr traditions explained

Gift giving is a common tradition during Eid al-Fitr, particularly for children. Families and friends often exchange presents, sweets or money - sometimes known as “Eidi” - as part of the celebrations marking the end of Ramadan.

The custom is seen as a way to spread joy, strengthen relationships and ensure everyone can take part in the festivities.

Alongside gift giving, many Muslims also focus on charitable donations, known as Zakat al-Fitr, to help those in need enjoy Eid.

What it Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important festivals in Islam, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

It is celebrated by Muslims around the world with special morning prayers, family gatherings, festive meals and acts of charity.

The exact date changes each year because it depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon, with religious authorities expected to confirm when the festival will take place.

In the UK and elsewhere, communities are currently waiting for an official announcement to determine whether Eid will fall on Friday or the following day.
