A homeowner has been left scratching his head after discovering a mysterious note hidden inside a duct in his house.

He explained he first found the note around five years ago and, despite thinking about it ever since, has still been unable to figure out its meaning.

Sharing the discovery on Reddit, he said: "Found this riddle hidden in my house. We came across it in a duct or something in our rental house. It's been stuck on my fridge unsolved for more than five years."

The note reads: "Riddle me this: Once a calm keeper, always true. Now a hard sleeper, there for you. What is green, grey and always dry?"

Still searching for answers, the man turned to social media in the hope that other users could help solve the puzzle.

In response, one user suggested: "Sage - it means wise advice, truth, and is a calming sleep aid, while also being greenish, greyish and dried."

Another guessed: "Absinthe? It was originally a social drink (calm keeper) but eventually became more of a nightcap (hard sleeper). It has a naturally green colour but becomes cloudy or grey when water is added because of a process called louching. In terms of liquor, 'dry' means unsweet, and absinthe is always dry."

A third user said: "It's a bottle of champagne. The bottles are green glass with silver or grey foil on the top, and champagne is often described as dry or 'brut'."

Meanwhile, another user tried to break down the riddle step by step.

They wrote: "Wood beam or treated wood. Once a calm keeper - when it was a tree. True - trees will always be there. Now it's a hard sleeper - turned into wooden beams.

"Always there for you - holding up your house. Green from treatment chemicals, grey from weather exposure and dry because wooden beams are dry."

Finally, another user offered a different theory, writing: "Cement. Calm keeper when it's wet and needs to be kept in place so it sets properly. Hard sleeper because once it hardens it becomes inactive. It's often grey, can turn green with moss, and once it sets it stays dry."

Despite the many theories, the riddle remains unsolved after more than five years.
