A Scottish council is holding a consultation on whether to bring in 20mph speed limits, just like the ones that have driven motorists potty in Wales.

Aberdeen City Council is considering the move to promote safer travel for pedestrians and cyclists and to "decrease the number of cars on the road".

The council committee said: “By lowering the speed of vehicles, people will feel more secure when using the road network, which will encourage them to choose active modes of transportation more often.

“This, in turn, will decrease the number of cars on the road, leading to a reduction in carbon emissions from vehicles.”

Councillor Ian Yuill, who represents the Liberal Democrats for Airyhall, Broomhill and Garthdee, argued that making Aberdeen’s roads safer is a “key priority” for the city council.

He said: “I welcome the decision by the Committee to consult on introducing more 20mph speed limits. This will give residents the opportunity to comment on proposals for lowering the speed limit in their area.”

The reduced speed limit would see 1,474 streets change to 20mph and would join 1,203 roads which already have the limit.

According to GB News, there are 1,725 roads with a 30mph limit, which would be reduced to 251 as the speed limit changes.

The speed limit will be in place on roads within a 100-metre walk of a school and on residential streets, with further slower speeds in areas within the same distance of a community centre, church, place of worship, sports facility, any hospital, GP or health centre.

The committee explained that reduced speeds are expected to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles.

The consultation with residents is underway so the council is yet to name a start date for the 20mph introduction, assuming the limits are introduced.

However, some reports have said the changes could come into effect this year.

An Aberdeen City Council spokesperson said: “The Net Zero, Environment and Transport Committee agreed at a meeting on Tuesday 11 June that a consultation is to be held on the potential of hundreds more streets across Aberdeen becoming safer with the expansion of a 20mph speed limit into built-up areas.”
