The insane plan to build a 45-mile tunnel between Britain and Ireland before 2050

Historical plans envisioned underwater travel between Wexford and Pembroke, significantly reducing travel times - but it is unlikely to ever happen.

There have been several proposed roads, railways, bridges, and tunnels, aimed at linking the islands of Ireland and Great Britain over the years - most commonly Boris Johnson's plan to build an underwater tunnel between Larne in Northern Ireland and Stranraer, Scotland, to prevent post-Brexit tensions on the Emerald Isle.

Another of the propositions, brought forth by the Irish Academy of Engineering in 2004, set out an ambitious vision for Ireland's transportation future, centered around the construction of a different major undersea tunnel.

The Tuskar Tunnel, a sub-sea connection between Wexford in Ireland and Pembroke in Wales, was a plan to revoultionise travel and trade between Ireland and Britain by 2050.

The proposed tunnel - which has not been talked about for some time - would have spanned around 45 miles, making it twice the length of the English Channel Tunnel.

This extensive project aimed to significantly enhance connectivity between Ireland and Britain, facilitating smoother and more efficient movement of people and goods.

By creating a direct and reliable link between Ireland and Britain, experts hoped the tunnel would bolster economic ties, fostering greater trade and collaboration between the two nations. This could have a profound impact on businesses, tourism, and regional development.

For the residents of Ireland and Wales, engineering bosses said the Tuskar Tunnel would dramatically alter daily life. Commutes would become shorter, and access to different regions would be more convenient.

The scrapped plan also included blueprints to for a new container port on the Shannon Estuary linking a freight line to Europe, as well as ideas for a Belfast-Dublin-Cork high speed train, and a new freight line from Rosslare to Shannon.
