More than 600 people have been affected after a leak at a nearby petrol station.

Thames Water has given more than 600 residents in Surrey an urgent notice not to drink tap water after a fuel leak.

The village of Bramley, just south of Guildford, has seen a total of 616 households impacted.

In response to the crisis, the company is providing bottled water at hastily set up stations. The sudden warning not to drink the water comes after a fuel leak from the village petrol station last year.

Thames Water has been testing the water in Bramley since October 2023, following a large fuel spill at a nearby petrol station.

Locals have been told not to drink the water until further investigations have been completed, although they can wash in it and use it to flush their toilets.

The water company confirmed test results show a "possible determination in quality" in some areas.

Jeremy Hunt, who was the local MP prior to the dissolution of parliament for the General Election issued the update yesterday evening.

Writing on social media, Hunt said: "I have this afternoon been on a call with the UKHSA, DEFRA, Thames Water and Asda with Cllr Austin.

"Thames Water are implementing a drinking water stop notice across much of Bramley Village. Please see the press release below.

"I have requested that bottled water stations are in Bramley itself - they are being set up now."

Tess Fayers, Operations Director for the Thames Valley and Home Counties said: "We are asking 616 Bramley properties not to drink the tap water following recent water sampling results.

"The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority, and we would like to reassure residents that this is a precautionary measure.

"We are in the process of delivering letters and bottled water to the affected properties.

"We are also identifying locations to set-up bottled water stations and we will share this information with our customers as soon as possible.

"We are already on site in the village proactively replacing sections of our pipes on Horsham Road to reduce the risk to our customers."
