The controversial scone debate has been settled - as new research shows Brits prefer jam first rather than cream. But do you agree? Vote in our poll.

In what is a triumphant win for the Cornish method, the new study found that nearly half of Brits prefer jam first.

The figures show 44 per cent staunchly advocate for jam first, while 32 per cent sit on the other side of the heated debate and argue clotted cream should be first.

Cream tea has been enjoyed in Britain since the 11th century and arguments over how to spread toppings on a scone still rage on to this day.

The Cornish method sees jam being spread on a scone before clotted cream, however it is a Devon tradition that cream meets scone first.

The new research, by Cornish clotted cream brand Rodda's, found that Brits are now experimenting with new toppings.

Brits are keen to try unconventional fillings such as cinnamon, sugar, and apple slices (21 per cent), lemon curd (21 per cent), and raspberry preserves with almond butter (20 per cent).

Savoury options such as smoked salmon and cream cheese (16 per cent) and sweet chilli jam with cheddar (15 per cent) are also on the rise.

Surprisingly, more men than women have enjoyed a cream tea in the past month.

The study, carried out ahead of National Cream Tea Day on June 28, also revealed that younger Brits particularly associate cream tea with The Royals and hit shows such as Bridgerton, The Crown, and Downton Abbey.

It also found that David Attenborough is our dream companion for cream tea. 15 per cent said they'd love to have cream tea with the veteran wildlife broadcaster, followed by King Charles (eight per cent), Mary Berry (seven per cent), Alison Hammond (seven per cent), and Amanda Holden (six per cent).

Nine per cent of men said they would love to have cream tea with their nan and 13 per cent of people would prefer to enjoy it solo.

Rodda's has partnered with Michelin-starred chef Paul Ainsworth to unveil a gourmet afternoon tea tasting menu.

Rodda's founder Nicholas Rodda said: "As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of National Cream Tea Day, people across the nation will come together to enjoy one of the country's favourite pastimes - scones, Cornish clotted cream, and jam.

"Whether you like jam first, or Cornish clotted cream first, we actually don't mind.

"Just tuck in and enjoy this special day. If you can throw an afternoon tea party, selling cream teas and help raise crucial funds for charity, that's even better."

Mr Ainsworth, of acclaimed restaurant No6 in Padstow, said of his new 5-course tasting cream tea menu: "This cream tea menu offers a unique twist on the classic cream tea that blends sweet and savoury elements to create a truly unforgettable at-home experience."
