Rick Stein’s seafront restaurant has left scores of disappointed diners furious at their pricy fish and chip dinner.

Fish and chips is a magic British dish that takeaways can nail - or fall well short of expectations.

Perhaps surprisingly then, it’s veteran UK chef Rick Stein’s up market Newquay restaurant that is leaving customers gutted about his £16.95 version of the UK classic.

Furious customers have taken to review sites online to share their disappointment at their experience at the posh eaterie that bills itself on its website as being “renowned for our fish and chips” and as the “perfect post beach or surf fayre to enjoy with a view.”

But one unhappy diner took to Google Reviews to fume that the “staff seemed ruffled” and that the food seemed “reheated” at the venue that first opened its doors back in 2015.

They said: “The mushy peas and curry sauce were average! NEVER AGAIN! I love Rick Stein so am very disappointed!"

They added: “I would not recommend anyone to go there! A local fish shop will be much better!”.

Another took to travel review site Tripadvisor to express their dissatisfaction saying it was a “huge let down.”

They said: “The cod was okay, the scampi was no different to the frozen kind you get at the supermarket, and the chips were AWFUL. Genuinely the worst chips I’ve ever had, dry, hard and tasteless, I’m sure they’re again just from the frozen aisle at Tesco or something.”

Another simply said it was the “The worst fish & chips I’ve ever had” with someone else adding it was “absolutely disgusting and overpriced”

The overall verdict from Tripadvisor users was 3.5 out of a possible rating of five - so there were plenty of customers that also left Stein’s restaurant happy.

One said: “What a lovely experience, ambiance was great and service very good. Great deal of choices for the fish lovers. Young lady who served us was very pleasant and attentive.”

Another added: “This restaurant is worth a visit for the view alone. I had read the poor reviews prior to my visit, so I opted to have Pad Thai from the Asian menu.

“Good food at a reasonable price, lovely, helpful staff and worth a visit to sit outside in the wonderful sun and sea air.”

The television chef Rick Stein - who has masses of dedicated fans - admitted he might not have long left to live as he opened up about his health in February this year.

The 77-year-old recently underwent major heart surgery and is now determined to make the most of what time he has left.

Express.co.uk has approached the restaurant for comment.
