Queen Margrethe of Denmark was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after falling at Fredensborg Castle, according to local media reports.

The 84-year-old, who shocked the world with her abdication earlier this year, was admitted to the Danish capital’s university hospital for observation, the royal house told Danish media.

She was reportedly not seriously hurt.

Head of communications, Lene Balleby, said: "According to the circumstances, the queen is doing well, but was admitted for observation for the time being."

King Frederik, Margrethe's son, told reporters he had spoken to her and that "she is in good hands."

She added: "I have decided that now is the right time. On 14 January 2024 – 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father – I will step down as queen of Denmark."
