The Royal Family are now enjoying their holidays in Balmoral where they will spend the rest of the summer relaxing in the Scottish Highlands.

But while they may have access to the best chefs and most intricate and exquisite dishes in the world, it's the simple things that they enjoy the most, according to a former staffer.

Grant Harrold, who worked as a butler for King Charles from 2004 to 2011, revealed that when the weather gets warmer and the sun is shining, the royals are quite partial to Eton Mess and Strawberries and Cream.

Eton Mess and Strawberries and Cream are the 'favourite' puddings of the family in warmer weather.

Speaking on behalf of Spin Genie, he said: "What they have in the summer is similar to the rest of the year - the King actually likes salad throughout the year.

"Strawberries and cream are a summer pudding that’s popular too, they also like an Eton Mess. Those are their favourites.

"Their eating habits definitely change throughout the seasons."

And thanks to their former chef, Darren McGrady, their favourite recipe seems to be surprisingly easy to make at home.

Mr McGrady was the personal chef of the late Queen Elizabeth for over fifteen years and also cooked for Princess Diana, Prince Harry and Prince William.

On his YouTube channel, the former royal chef explained how to make the perfect, summery dessert in three easy steps, with the recipe as follows:

Eton Mess - Makes four portions

  • 1 ½ cups strawberries, quartered
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • Juice of half a small lemon
  • 1 ¼ cups heavy cream
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups meringue cookies, crushed
  • 5 egg whites
  • ½ tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 ¼ cups sugar

Directions:

- In a medium-sized bowl add the quartered strawberries; toss them in the lemon juice and sugar. Let sit for 30 minutes.

- In the bowl of an electric mixer or large bowl with a hand-held mixer beat the heavy cream, vanilla and sugar until you reach soft peaks.

- Layer the strawberries and liquid with the whipped cream and crushed meringues. Serve with extra strawberries and crushed meringues.
