Meghan Markle: Canada’s view of royal move detailed by expert
The Duchess of Sussex was not honoured with the Diamond Maple Leaf brooch owned by Queen Elizabeth II’s mother. The brooch was originally gifted to Elizabeth by King George VI before their historic 1939 tour of Canada. It rarely is loaned to other members of the Royal Family, but has been seen on future Queen Consorts during appearances in the Commonwealth country.
Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge were gifted the brooch.
The Queen herself has also been seen wearing the family heirloom.
But despite Meghan being married to Prince Harry, who is sixth in the line of succession, she wasn’t honoured with the sparkling piece of jewellery.
The Duchess, now living in the US after stepping back from royal life, will not get the opportunity to wear the brooch.

The brooch was made by Aspery, and features diamonds set in platinum shaped into a sugar maple tree leaf.
It was gifted to Elizabeth ahead of her visit to Canada in 1939, which was the first ever visit from a reigning monarch to the country.
The Queen inherited the heirloom when her mother died in March 2002, and has since worn it throughout her many trips to the Commonwealth country.
The monarch has visited Canada more than any other country, with her latest trip coming in 2010 for a total of 24 times.
Camilla was loaned the broach during her and Prince Charles’ first official visit to Canada in November 2009.
Camilla made another visit to the country in 2017, where she again was spotted wearing Elizabeth’s jewellery.
Kate and Prince William also were gifted the brooch during a 2011 tour of Canada.
The Duchess of Cambridge showed off the heirloom during that years Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa.

While Meghan is an American citizen, she spent much of her life in Canada including six years filming the TV show Suits.
But the Duchess never made an official visit to Canada during their time as working royals.
Harry, however, has made four officials visits to the country, with his last royal appearance came in 2017.
Meghan and Harry did spend Christmas last year in British Columbia, and visited Canada House in London to thank the High Commissioner for their stay.
Speaking to Janice Charette, the Canadian High Commissioner to the UK, Meghan described Vancouver as “beautiful”.
Ms Charatte said of the Sussex royals: “The fact that they were able to go to Canada to enjoy the holiday season with friends and family and basically to have privacy and be undisturbed and to be able to enjoy peace and tranquillity and the beautiful country, I couldn’t be happier.”
After stepping back from the Royal Family, Meghan and Harry took flight to Canada to stay in a luxury estate.
But the couple eventually left the country in April to settle in Los Angeles, California.
