Delivering the headlines on Heart FM in Scotland, Fiona Winchester shocked Britain by announcing the death of the Prime Minister.
She told listeners at 8.30 this morning: “From Global's newsroom, I'm Fiona Winchester. David Cameron has died…”
But the tongue-tied presenter soon corrected herself to inform stunned listeners it was actually iconic musician David Bowie who had died, following his 18-month battle with cancer.
She then described how Mr Cameron, still very much alive, had this morning delivered his own tribute to the 69-year-old star.
Listeners were stunned after being told David Cameron was dead... but it was actually David Bowie
David Bowie was someone who truly deserves to be described as a genius
Many listeners suggested Miss Winchester had been guilty of “wishful thinking”.
Michael Bentley wrote on Twitter: “Someone on Heart FM mistakenly announced that David Cameron had died instead of David Bowie? Oh, if only it were that way round!”
Ethan Dalton posted: “Shout out to the news lady on Heart who reported that David Cameron had died, she's certainly living the dream.”
And Kevin Sloman added: “If only. Wishful thinking?”
The Tory leader today joined high-profile names in paying tribute to Bowie.
He said: “ David Bowie was someone who people of my age, and those quite a bit older, felt we grew up with.
“He provided a soundtrack to our lives, from the first time I heard Space Oddity to the pride of welcoming British athletes at the London Olympics to one of his masterpieces - 'Heroes'.
"He was also a master of reinvention, who kept getting it right, leaving a body of work that people will still be listening to in a 100 years time.
“He was someone who truly deserves to be described as a genius.”
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn hailed Bowie as a "great musician, great entertainer".
He added: "As soon as I heard of his death, very, very sad, Life On Mars comes flowing back into my mind.
“Wonderful song, wonderful guy."
