Kay Burley reacts to Wes Streeting 'joke' on Sky News

Wes Streeting was torn to shreds by top Sky News presenter Kay Burley this morning, after an awkward joke caused toe-curling scenes.

Touring the media studios this morning, Mr Streeting was hoping to answer questions about Labour’s plan for the NHS, however last night’s news about Diane Abbott clearly upended his game plan.

After questioning Ms Abbott, Kay Burley turned to the NHS, asking Mr Streeting: “I’m a bit confused about what you’re doing about the backlog, because if I look at what Sir Keir Starmer says, he says…”

At this point Mr Streeting jumped in with an awkward jibe, accusing Ms Burley of spending “so much time on Diane Abbott!”

Ms Burley asked him to repeat himself, and after a cringeworthy pause Mr Streeting repeated his quip, adding: “Let’s get into Labour’s plan.”

A deeply unimpressed Kay Burley drolly responded: “Oh I see, that was a joke. Sorry, I missed that.”

The clash sparked plenty of reactions on social media, with one journalist warning: “Don’t mess with Kay Burley!”

Another said: “Yikes. And he’s one of the better ones”.

Ms Burley also looked unimpressed after she asked what qualities Natalie Elphicke has that Diane Abbott doesn’t.

Mr Streeting insisted: “Honestly Kay, I don’t know, I’ve been relying on the news reports this morning about the decision that may have been taken, I’ve seen what Diane Abbott has said publicly”.

“I’m not involved in this process so I’ll resist the temptation to be a commentator on it and just say… what I’m here to talk about and what I can affect change on is 7.5 million people on NHS waiting lists”.
