Angela Rayner is among left-wing politicians who have been forced to cancel appearances at Glastonbury Festival due to the General Election.

The Labour deputy leader was due to take part in a panel about the next national ballot on the Left Field stage on Saturday.

But she pulled out after Rishi Sunak called the election months earlier than expected for July 4.

Left-wing winger Billy Bragg wrote on Instagram: “Late last year when we began planning this year’s Left Field at Glastonbury, we thought it would be a good idea to invite a number of Labour MPs, given there was a strong chance that they might be in power by the end of the year.

“We had more or less confirmed one for each panel when Sunak called the election.

"Understandably, MPs feel they need to be out campaigning on the last weekend before the ballot, so the panel’s team led by Rosie Rogers has been working hard to find suitable replacements.”

Nadia Whittome, the Labour candidate for Nottingham East, has also dropped out of an event on the migrant crisis.

She was due to speak on a panel called "Small Boats: Safe Routes and Solidarity".

Caroline Lucas, who stood down as the Green MP for Brighton Pavillion but is campaigning for her successor, is also absent from the final line-up.

Kate Osborne, who is seeking re-elected as Labour's candidate for Jarrow, will still take part in a talk on the Post Office Horizon IT scandal called "Reimagining Justice".

Other events on the stage during the weekend include "Trans Liberation Now!" and "Israel-Palestine: Hope and Solidarity in Action".
