Peonies are beautiful flowers and one of the rare flowers that look almost as beautiful in the bud as they do in bloom.

However, if you have a special event that you bought the peonies for, you will want them to be in full bloom.

Thankfully, there are not just ways to keep fresh flowers blooming longer, but you can also speed up the blooming process, according to Freddie the flower expert behind retailer Freddie’s Flowers.

In a recent YouTube video on peonies sharing “how to get the most out of the splendid flowers”, Freddie gave viewers an insight on how to “beautifully open up” blooms.

He recommends that households gently remove branches below the vase neckline to avoid the vase from looking “congested”.

Then to “encourage the peonies to open”, he said: “You can gently dunk the peony head into warn water removing any sticky sap.”

Freddie added that you can also tap the peony flower on a hard surface to “loosen up the petals” - he did this for around five seconds.

While the phones will arrive looking small, the “size of a ping pong ball”, they will “beautifully open up over the course of three or four days” with this method.

The flower experts at Interflora also recommend using warm water to “speed up the blooming process”.

They said: “Place stems is a vase of tepid water containing flower food. The slightly warm water will also help speed up this blooming process but ensure the water isn’t too warm because hot water won’t help speed up the blooming process but instead will do the opposite.”

For peonies to open up “faster” they recommended covering them with a large plastic bag to “seal in the ethylene gas to encourage them to open”.

Alternatively, households can place the blooms as close to ripe bananas, to add more ethylene gas.

Once the peonies are blooming, Maryam Ghani, the brand manager at Haute Florist, recommends households use vodka and sugar to keep them “fresh for longer”.

She said: “Peonies are known for their fleeting beauty, but with a bit of care, you can enjoy them for much longer. One of the best-kept secrets in floral care is adding vodka and sugar to the vase water."

According to Maryam, vodka acts as a preservative. “A small amount of vodka, about a teaspoon, inhibits bacterial growth, which is one of the main reasons flowers wilt prematurely," she explained. “Bacteria can clog the stems and prevent the flowers from absorbing water properly.”

Sugar, on the other hand, serves as nourishment for the flowers. "Just one teaspoon of sugar dissolved in the vase water provides the energy the flowers need to stay vibrant," Maryam noted. "It's like giving your flowers a little boost."
