'Simple' method for banishing three common weeds from gardens 'removes the entire root'
Weeds are categorised as plants that are growing where you don't want them to. There are a plethora of weed varieties in the UK with some being more persistent than others.
If there's an unsightly-looking plant poking up from the gravel or between your paving slabs then it's likely a weed.
Weeds can make gardens look messy and can be difficult to remove if they've developed tap roots.
With this in mind, Tom Allen, owner of TGA Concrete Pumping, has shared how to remove common weeds from gardens.
1. Dandelions
Dandelions can look attractive with their yellow flowers and "clock" seed heads. However, they can appear in the most awkward of places and can be tricky to remove.
Dandelions have deep taproots which means they're difficult to pull out entirely. They can also quickly spread if they're not dealt with promptly.

Gardening tips: Four homemade hacks to kill garden weeds
Removing dandelions
Tom suggested: "To get rid of dandelions following heavy rainfall, use a weeding tool to dig deep and remove the entire root.
"Applying a post-emergent herbicide can also be an effective method of eliminating this plant from your outdoor area.
"Make sure you choose a herbicide that targets broadleaf weeds, though, to ensure it won't harm the surrounding grass or other desirable plants."
2. Buttercups
Buttercups can also look quite attractive on lawns and flower beds, however, they can also pop up in the most inconvenient spots.
Buttercups are known for their bright yellow flowers and shiny, three-lobed leaves. The plants tend to spread quickly and can often be found between concrete patio slabs.

Removing buttercups
Tom said: "The simple method of pulling buttercups out by hand is often effective for smaller infestations, but it is pivotal you remove the entire plant, including the roots.
"For larger areas, consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide before the growing season begins in spring to prevent buttercups from taking over your concrete patio. Be cautious with herbicide applications to avoid any runoff onto nearby grass or plants."
3. Plantain
Plantains are more unusual but can cause a lot of issues for gardeners following a long period of rain.
Plantains are hardy and often appear in compacted soil including in the gaps between patio slabs.
Removing plantain
Tom said hand pulling is the most effective method for removing small plantain plants.
He continued: "For larger infestations, though, it is advisable to use a weed killer containing glyphosate, ensuring it is applied directly to the weed and not the surrounding vegetation.
"Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide, so exercise caution to avoid harming desirable plants."
