Rats are a problem the instant they take up residence in your garden or house

Rats can cause a surprising amount of damage to property in a short amount of time. Homes, vehicles, and gardens are not safe when rats are around.

Rats also pose a health risk because they spread infectious diseases to humans and pets.

Once a rat problem has been discovered it is imperative to act quickly to remove these pests and ensure they do not return.

But there is also something you can do to prevent rats from appearing in the first place - grow certain plants.

According to the experts at Top Best Pest Services, the answer to preventing a rat infestation lies in the plants that repel rats and there are five of them.

Plants to deter rats

1. Allium

Allium is a plant whose flower is the first thing you would recognise, and like most flowers, the flowers have a sweet scent.

However, what you might not know is that alliums are related to onions, garlic, and leeks. The experts explained: “These may smell nice when cooked, but the raw ‘oniony’ scent of the allium plant is more than enough to ward away rats and even mice.”

2. Mint

Mint provides a pleasurable scent, flavour, and sensation. Fortunately, this benefit is only applicable to humans and not pests - especially rats.

For rats, “the scent of mint is utterly revolting”, just like other strong and overwhelming scents.

As you might know, rats have a strong sense of smell which is the main reason why they’re so good at sniffing out sources of food to dig up.

Fortunately, mint, especially peppermint because of its higher mint content, is “one of the best plants that repel rats”.

3. Lavender

Lavender is a prevalent scent as it promotes stress relief by encouraging relaxation, but when it comes to trouble with pests, you’re also going to hit two birds with one stone through lavenders.

The scent of lavender is “overwhelming to rats”. With this in mind, the experts claim that if households place a few lavender plants around their garden, their home “will be clear of rats”.

4. Wood hyacinth

Wood hyacinth or the Spanish bluebell has had a “long history of proving itself to be one of the best plants that repel rats”.

For centuries gardeners have noticed that planting wood hyacinths in their garden “drastically reduces the number of rats that take over and eat from the garden”.

One might think this plant is merely a thing of beauty, but they act like “silent scent-powered bodyguards that keep rats and mice at bay”.

5. Sweet pea

The flowers sweet peas produce are bright pink and can be described as “flowery” and “sweet”.

Due to its pleasantly strong aroma, “rats and mice are repelled” by these plants.
