A top mechanic has warned motorists could “destroy their car” by making a major transmission error in 2024.

Leading expert Scotty Kilmer has stressed that petrol and diesel owners should not mix transmission fluids on older vehicles under any circumstances.

He admitted it may be fine to change fluids on newer vehicles that have done a lot of mileage but older cars may be damaged if two different fluids are put together.

One viewer asked Scotty: “I've got a 2019 Q50 Infiniti, 140,000 miles and never changed the fluid. I want to change it. What's the most conservative way to do it?"

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Scotty replied: “With high mileage, if they’ve never been changed often I don’t advise you to change it but you’ve got a rather unique situation.

“You've got 140,000 miles, most of them probably on the highway, it's probably not dirty.

“Just drain and fill. Take the drain bolt out, drain it out, close it up, measure what came out, put the same amount back in and buy the fluid at the Nissan dealer in the parts department. It's not that expensive.

“Don't mix fluids because a bunch of it is still going to be in the transmission. You don't want to mix fluids. That's the most conservative way to do it.

“Now let's say it was 20 years old and you had 140,000 miles and it had never been touched, I'd say leave it alone. But yours put the mileage on so fast it’s probably not all that dirty.”

Valvoline Global stressed that using the wrong type of transmission fluid can result in “irreversible damage” to vehicles.

They explained: “Immediately after putting the wrong transmission fluid in your vehicle, you can start noticing issues while driving.

“In most cases, people notice strange noises, overheating, and slipping gears. Do not ignore these warning signs, because they will not go away on their own.”

They revealed there was a range of more long-term effects which could impact road users who mix two compounds.

They admitted driving with the wrong type of fluid can cause “premature wear and tear of the transmission” and “issues with efficiency”.

These can come with hefty repair bills in what could be a major blow to cash-strapped road users amid the cost of living crisis.
