Motorists could damage a vital car component by driving in searing heat this summer as temperatures continue to rise across the UK

Experts across the industry have pointed out the chances of petrol, diesel and electric cars picking up bodywork and paint damage in the hot weather in a possible major blow to road users.

Falling foul of sun damage or being caught out by trees could set drivers back hundreds of pounds with almost all drivers at risk.

Paintwork damage may not impact how a car runs but it could affect the overall physical appearance of a vehicle.

This is likely to be a major problem for motorists who are looking to sell their vehicles with damage likely to drop values unless fixed by a mechanic.

Justin Hall, Director of Engineering at IMO Car Wash stressed that UV rays could cause havoc as he urged road users to take caution.

He said: “A spell of warm weather is exactly what we need after a miserable start to summer, but if you’re a vehicle owner, then it’s important to remember that heat can cause damage to your car.

“Powerful UV rays can cause the pigments in your paintwork to deteriorate, leading to discolouration, while high temperatures can cause your vehicle’s metal components to expand and contract, potentially resulting in warping and misalignment.

“Meanwhile, extended exposure to heat can cause minor cracks in your windshield and windows to expand, which could prove dangerous for unaware drivers.”

IMO Car Wash stressed that regular washing would help remove contaminants from a vehicle’s bodywork.

Some car washes also provide a protective layer which helps to maintain the integrity of metal parts.

According to BookMyGarge, the leading price comparison site for vehicle service and repairs, the average cost to fix any damage will be around £400.

However, the experts stressed costs are likely to vary depending on the extent of your damage and the size of your car.

Meanwhile, a full car respray is much more expensive with fees around the £2,500 mark in the UK.

Direct sun damage is not the only concern this summer with motorists at risk of paint damage by simply parking underneath trees.

A spokesperson for Swansway Motor Group explained: “Ideally, you should wipe or rinse tree sap from your car as soon as you find it.

“Once it’s baked on, removal is more difficult and you might need the help of something like hot soapy water or a clay bar, followed by a good old wax to restore your car’s paint finish. Think about parking away from trees and using a windscreen sunshade instead.”

"The issues with trees do not end there. Where there are trees there are birds and where there are birds there is poo!

“This is also capable of damaging your car as the berries and seeds in bird droppings can stain and scratch your car, while the uric acid corrodes paintwork.”
