Petrol and diesel owners save a staggering £2,745 per year in car tax fees amid the cost of living crisis by taking advantage of a free DVLA service.

According to experts at LeaseCar, drivers across the UK are “choosing not to run their cars” completely in a bid to save money.

They warn road users can apply for a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) which pulls a vehicle off the road but saves drivers the heavy cost of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED).

The move means vehicle owners will not be able to get behind the wheel of their cars except for specific circumstances.

However, those with multiple car or motorists who rarely make trips could benefit from the service even if for a short period of time.

Tim Alcock, spokesperson for LeaseCar.UK said: “Times are tough at the moment and a lot of people are making some difficult decisions when it comes to how to save money.

“Some are choosing not to run their cars and are opting for public transport instead. But many don’t realise they could end up with a fine even if their car does not leave the drive.

“Unless they tell DVLA and obtain a SORN notification the authorities will see the vehicle as untaxed and therefore they could be fined.”

According to GOV.UK, owners will get a refund for any full months of remaining tax.

It means motorists can secure back payments as well as take advantage of future savings every month.

Road users can apply for a SORN online using the 11-digit number in their vehicle log book (V5C) and a 16-digit reference number on a vehicle tax reminder.

SORN requests can also be started over the phone or by post through a V890 application form.

Officials stress that the “SORN will start on the first day of the next month if you apply in the month your vehicle tax is due to expire”.

However, motorists can only use a vehicle with a SORN in place to travel to a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment.

Road users could be hit with a staggering fine of up to £2.500 if a vehicle is used for any other reason.

Tim added: “Receiving a penalty fine when you are actually trying to save cash would be a bitter pill to swallow so we want to make sure all motorists are fully informed of the legal requirements.

“And once you have an approved SORN application, the penalties for taking the car on the road untaxed are extensive. Make sure you abide by the law at all times.”
