With the cost of running a car continuing to rise, a mechanic has shared three trusty yet attractive used models that do not cost a fortune to buy.

A popular mechanic has recommended three used cars that are typically overlooked but offer reliability and style for less than £10,000.

David Long runs the YouTube channel Car Wizard and will often post videos in which he gives advice to viewers looking to buy a dependable used model and shares stories about his life as a mechanic.

In a recent video, the American mechanic discusses reliable used cars that drivers can get for under $8,000 (£6,320), recommending an eighth-generation Honda Accord.

He explained: "This is a 300,000-mile car, you can expect to get that kind of life out of it. They have a four-cylinder or a V6, depending on what you want. I like the four-cylinder option because it has less moving parts, less spark plugs, less coils - a whole lot of less in terms of expense and repairs.

"Actually, my own mother has a silver Honda Accord and it has been bulletproof for her. Both of my parents have their own separate car - a Honda Accord and a Toyota Highlander. They're at that age where there's no time for broken down cars, they wanted cars that will last and not be in the workshop every 90 days."

Built between 2008 and 2015, the eight-generation Honda Accord is a large family saloon or estate car that has a good reputation for solid build quality and dependability.

Whilst it is not the most attractive choice for a used family car, most offer a very high level of standard equipment and dependable petrol and diesel engines.

Nevertheless, those looking for a reliable used Accord are advised to listen out for squeaks and grumbles when changing gears, which can be a sign of a worn-out clutch.

Another model that David recommended was the Subaru Outback, highlighting that models built between 2009 and 2013 are generally the most reliable.

He added: "These are going to be all-wheel drive, so very rugged, and are all over the country. There are certain places that you can visit, especially mountainous areas, and these cars are everywhere, like ants on the ground.

"There's a reason for that, they're really that good. The years I've recommended are examples after the blown head gaskets. If you get a 2003 or 2004 Subaru, it's very likely you could be looking to some head gasket issues, but in this year range that's pretty much been solved."

Finally, whilst not the most practical model in the world, the mechanic stated that drivers after a dependable sporty model should look at a 2007 to 2014 Ford Mustang.

He advised: "Some would say that these are only good for destroying crowds, but I'm talking about getting from point A to point B, and they also can be very fun to drive.

"These are actually built very well, all jokes aside, they're a really good car, and any shop worth their weight should be able to repair a domestic Mustang. My wife's 2008 Ford Mustang GT500 has 210,000 miles on it and it still drives really well."
