Used car expert shares affordable performance models that ‘really deliver the smiles’
An automotive personality has taken to YouTube to share some of the modern, high-performance luxury models on the used market for under £20,000.
A used car buying expert has shared the best recently made luxury models that motorists can buy on the secondhand market for under £20,000.
Jim Starling runs the YouTube channel DefinitelyNotAGuru where he uploads videos sharing tips on buying the best used cars.
In a recent video, Jim encouraged motorists looking for a trendy performance car to consider the latest generation Hyundai i30N, noting that there are many examples on sale for around £15,000.
He advised: “The first one’s a Hyundai i30N. It’s the 2.0-litre T-GDI N Performance hatchback, 275PS of power. £15,800 at the moment.
“These were significantly more just a few months ago. It’s insurance group 28, £180 a year to tax and [gets] 34mpg. Performance wise, [it takes] 6.1 [seconds] to 62mph, 271 horsepower. These cars really deliver the smiles.”

In the video, Jim showed viewers a listing for a 2019 Hyundai i30N with two previous owners that was on sale for £15,795.
Whilst Hyundai are not best known for making high-performance cars, the N trim level gives the family hatchback a more aggressive look and a powerful 2.0-litre turbocharged engine.
The model is still produced, and can be bought new for £35,110, meaning buyers can save nearly £20,000 by purchasing a well-kept used example.

For a model with a more established reputation, Jim suggested that motorists can buy a five-year old Audi TT for a very similar budget.
He added: “For around the £15,000 mark, if you play your cards right, [you can get] a 2019 Audi TT TFSI Sport. 195 horsepower, with a virtual dashboard, heated seats, it’s well-specced and £16,400.
“A lot of people poopoo the TT, they say it was a hairdresser’s car, but they handle like an absolute dream, they’re a brilliant laugh to drive and also a great platform if you want to do any modifications.”
Finally, Jim noted that drivers can still have a relatively modern car that can also be used as a practical family car for under £20,000, showing viewers a 2017 BMW 4-Series.
He continued: “Now we’ve got the BMW 4-Series, it’s the 3.0-litre 440i M-Sport Coupe, and these have come down a lot in recent times. This one was listed in June, so they’re not selling this one very quickly, at £21,500, and they’ve dropped it by £3,500 to £17,999.
“It’s a great looking car the 4-Series, I think the back end especially, I love it. It’s got a Harmen Kardon audio, pro-nav, heated seats, front and rear parking sensors, it’s got plenty of spec on it.”
