A popular automotive personality has taken to YouTube to recommend three high-end models that are surprisingly affordable on the used car market.

Shahzad Sheikh, better known as Brown Car Guy, runs a YouTube channel in which he road tests the latest models, reacts to news from the motor industry and shares tips that can help drivers save money.

In a recent video, Shahzad discusses the best bargains on the used car market, stating that those who are interested in a cheap hot hatchback should consider the Honda Civic Type R.

He advised: "Now, I know these got a little bit of bad press because the subtleties of the suspension were not quite as sharp as the one [Civic Type R] before. But, it's the combination of that screaming VTEC engine with that shuttle pod design.

"I still rate them. I drove them here, there, on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on some mountain roads. I had a whale of a time in them.

"The thing about Type Rs, as anyone who has a Honda and VTEC engines will know, is you have to rev the nuts off them. If you're below 6,000 to 7,000rpm it'll just drive like a normal Civic, but once you get through that rev range, that's when you'll be impressed."

A long-running model in Honda's range, the YouTuber recommended the FD2 generation of Honda Civic Type R, which was built from 2007 to 2011.

Featuring a 2.0-litre VTEC engine, which is more efficient across a wider range of speeds, the Civic Type R is capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 146mph.

Despite costing around £25,000 when they were new, Shahzad noted that used car buyers can get behind the wheel of one today for less than £3,000.

Later in the video, Shahzad recommended that drivers looking for a cheap luxury model consider the Jaguar XE, stating many are available for less than £5,000.

He added: "Again, I drove this car in the UAE, and it's Jaguar's baby model. I drove it as a V6 and really enjoyed it, but the 2.0-litre was also really eager and fitted the car really well - it was a sporty little saloon.

"That thing, brand new in 2015, was £28,000. You can get one today for under £5,000, and that's less than 10 years old. A nicely equipped, modern-generation Jaguar for under £5,000, and I really love the style of it with those slim headlights. That's a bargain."

Finally, the YouTuber suggested that one of the most affordable Italian sportscars on the used market is the Maserati Granturismo.

He continued: "The fact is that, not only does the engine note bring out a certain sense of excitement when you hear it, but the body shape itself is really sexy - it's just absolutely gorgeous. In 2009 a brand new Maserati Granturismo was £85,000.

"Now, bear in mind that this is old Maserati so the switch gear wouldn't make any sense and most of it would stop working, the screens were a bit strange and there were buttons in weird places. There are going to be foibles, there are going to be problems, but today you can have a great Italian sportscar for under £15,000."
