Like Jeremy Clarkson, who revealed recently that he felt "too fat and old" to continue on The Grand Tour, James May also had his reservations - and says he won't "miss the stress" now that it's all over.

The pair, along with their co-star Richard Hammond, traversed dangerous roads, encountered mechanical failures and faced the terrifying prospect of crashing while testing some of the world's most impressive supercars. The finale, set to be screened later this month on Amazon Prime, will mark the end of the trio's televised driving days together - and James has opened up on exactly how he feels about saying goodbye.

"I won't really miss the stress of it because I’m old now and a bit frail compared with back then [when we started]," he confessed of the 22-year working relationship he shared with Richard and Jeremy. "In the end, we got to the point where we said, 'No, we must stop whilst we're still vaguely ahead. We mustn't keep going until we embarrass ourselves."

He continued to GB News, "I’ve always said if it ends tomorrow, which it nearly did at one point, that I should just be grateful that I had the opportunity. I could always have gone back to some sort of proper life and done something responsible and sensible."

James has certainly had some lively experiences with his co-stars in the past, during filming for both The Grand Tour and Top Gear. The latter saw him suffer a concussion in Syria after being knocked down by a tow rope - and Jeremy and Richard had to visit him in hospital while wearing burqas as disguises.

The trio also dodged landmines and a bad case of food poisoning during their journey in the country.

Then there was the terrifying car crash he endured while filming for The Grand Tour special A Scandi Flick.

He drove a car into a wall at 75mph in Norway while competing with his co-stars to drive the fastest through a tunnel at a disused submarine base.

James was later belittled by Jeremy, who joked the accident had happened to the "slowest driver in the history of motoring".

He had to be rushed to hospital and treated for a cracked rib and abrasions.

However, that was two less ribs than were damaged when a filming session saw him kicked by a horse in Argentina.

Meanwhile, more recently, Richard Hammond was in tears over the ending of the show, but James - who previously said he had a "mutual loathing" with the other two - was more stoic.

The synopsis for the suspenseful finale reads: "In their last ever Grand Tour adventure, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May ignore Mr Wilman’s instruction to drive EVs down a grey British motorway and go rogue, heading to Zimbabwe in three glorious cars they’ve always wanted to own.

"A 1982 Lancia Montecarlo, a 1974 Ford Capri 3-litre and a 1974 Triumph Stag. They embark on a classic road trip through some of the most stunning landscapes they’ve ever encountered, winding through mountains, going across dry planes, cruising down boulevards, and taking their chances crossing a crocodile-infested lake on three unusual car-carrying boats."
