Countdown's Susie Dent's poignant message to co-star ahead of bittersweet show exit

Countdown's Susie Dent offered fans an update after suddenly announcing last week she would be stepping down from her radio role.

Susie Dent reveals how she got onto Countdown in 2023

Susie Dent revealed yesterday that this week's Something Rhymes with Purple is the "anti-penultimate" episode as she prepares to leave the show.

However her co-host Gyles Brandreth insisted that despite the podcast coming to an end in its current format, the pair will "remain friends".

Susie shared: "This is Gyles, I think the anti penultimate episode?"

Gyles replied: "It is the third from the end, it is. Something Rhymes with Purple as we know it, not that you and I will be parting company because we have been friends for so long. I love listening to you talk about words.

"We shall be manifesting ourselves in a different form, in the future, but yes this is us over three weeks saying, 'Au revoir'."

Gyles confirmed the pair would remain close despite no longer working together. He added cryptically: "Life is full of change."

Last week Susie and Gyles announced the podcast would be coming to an end.

The Countdown star divulged: "It makes us both sad and excited. There will be new things to come, but we will keep the wonderful Purple People community posted about where we are going next and what we are going to do.

"It's not the end, but in this form, it is," she finished.

On the podcast, the hosts invite their listeners to enhance their vocabulary, uncover the hidden origins of language and share their love of words.

Speaking on the podcast that has been running for five years, Giles and Susie previously shared what is "underappreciated" about the show.

Gyles told London Theatre Direct: "It’s genuinely improvised. Susie really does know all this amazing stuff about words and language. It’s all there in her incredible head.

Susie added: "I'm not sure about underappreciated, but the marvel of every show for me is how bottomless Gyles's reservoir of anecdotes is.

"There seems to be no one he hasn't met and no theatre whose boards he hasn't trodden. His really has been a remarkable life. I'd also like to give a nod to Kathy Klugston's marvellous Purple Shipping Forecast that kicks off the show."

Meanwhile, Susie is set to be very busy as she announced she is releasing a new book, as she expressed her excitement and nervousness about the news and shared a link for pre-orders.

She wrote: "This is very happyfying. And also a little terrifying", while also sharing a link to pre-order a copy.
