BBC Breakfast's Charlie Stayt and wife's company 'facing bankruptcy' with '1000s in red'

The BBC Breakfast presenter's broadcasting firm Stayt Limited is reportedly £6,409 in the red.

BBC Breakfast star Charlie Stayt and his wife's broadcasting firm Stayt Limited has reportedly been served a petition from HMRC. According to The Sun, the pair's firm was £6,409 in the red in accounts filed in December and covering to the end of March 2023.

On Monday, the pair were reportedly served individual petitions requesting the money be paid back. Charlie and Anne have both been listed as directors for Stayt Limited, a television programming and broadcasting company.

HMRC are not able to comment on individual cases, but told Express.co.uk: "We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”

A representative for Charlie has also been approached, but is yet to respond. The BBC has additionally declined to comment. According to Caseboard, the presenter is listed as the debtor facing a bankrupcty petition.

It's not known if he has appealed or discharged the case. Charlie joined BBC Breakfast back in 2006 and regularly fronts the show alongside Naga Munchetty and other co-stars.

As of July 2023, the presenter is said to have earned between £190k and £194,999 a year for his presenting role.

On how he coped with the early starts to host the show, he previously told RadioTimes.com: "I refuse to snooze. As soon as the alarm goes off, I am up.

"The other thing is, I embrace the siesta. It’s become a big thing for me.

"I sort of sit down in the afternoon and consciously do nothing. No snooze and have a siesta, that's the formula."

In his personal life, he has been married to long-term wife Anne for 29 years.

Together, they share two children; daughter Phoebe and son Jake.

Before making his move into television, the presenter worked in radio on the likes of Capital, LBC and BBC Radio 5 Live.

He began working for ITN in 1995 before joining Five News as a reporter.

Charlie then moved onto BBC Breakfast in 2006 as a relief presenter which led to his role as a Friday to Sunday presenter, followed by his more regular current position.
