Greece is one of the go-to summer holiday destinations for Brits who want to enjoy the sun and relax.

While many head to places like Mykonos and Rhodes, the small island of Kythira has been touted as another great option.

Located south of Peloponnese, Kythira is a part of the Ionian island group.

It is one of the more secluded Greek islands, making it a serene retreat with lots of nature and stunning beaches.

The island is also famed for its Venetian architecture, abandoned settlements, monuments, and waterfalls.

At the bucolic Milopotamos, you can swim under waterfalls and bask in the peaceful surrroundings.

Due to its location, getting there requires a bit more effort.

The island is accessible from Athens via domestic flights. Alternatively, you can make your way to Kythira from Piraeus port (Athens) and the the ports of Neapoli in the Peloponnese and Kissamos in Crete.

The Melidoni Beach, Kalami Beach and Paralia Kaladi are up there with the best coasta spots on the island.

Reflecting on their time in Kythira, one Trip Advisor user said: "Diakofti has a very beautiful sandy beach with a very calm sea given the configuration of the place.

"To the north east, the village of Ag Pelagia has a fairly large sandy beach which is certainly organized in summer. There are quite a few restaurants with tables set up by the beach, shops, and accommodations."

Another added: "We have visited Kythira 8 times and I would advise you that the best place to stay is Kapsali that would be suitable for you.

"It has two beautiful bays, safe swimming and a lovely beach. You can do good walks from there. There are plentiful tavernas and cafe. Diakofti is lovely to visit but is a bit ‘end of the world’. I hope you enjoy your stay.

David Doughty, CEO at Admiral Jet, told the Daily Express in March that Kythira is one of the hidden gems among the Greek islands.

He said: “For a retreat away from tourist hotspots, consider visiting Kythira. Ideal for a peaceful getaway, this island of unspoiled beauty is great for travellers in search of a slower-paced break.”

Earlier this year, it was reported that a neighbouring island is offering money and free property to families who move there.

But you have to meet certain requirements to be eligible. Applicants needed to have four children to qualify.

Andrea Harhalakis, President of nearby Antikythera, an island close to Kythira, said: "We need young families, large enough to make Antikythera alive and full of children’s voices."
