As a couple in our forties with a passion for food and art, but not so much for long-haul travel, we were surprised it took us this long to discover Forte dei Marmi in Tuscany, a dreamy destination just a two-hour flight away from the UK.

After landing in Pisa and picking up our rental car, we couldn't resist a quick visit to the famous Leaning Tower before heading to the coast. Any grumbles about our 6am flight quickly disappeared as we found a parking spot in the city centre, just a two-minute walk from this bustling tourist hotspot.

We took the obligatory "holding up the tower" photo (of course) and grabbed a quick bite in the square before the crowds descended.

We then travelled to our accommodation, the stylish La Serena hotel in Forte dei Marmi, a 40-minute drive from Pisa and a location that was to completely surprise us.

As you enter this Tuscan coastal town, you're immediately struck by the stunning views: mountains on one side, a lengthy beachfront on the other, and a lively, upscale town in between, reports the Daily Record.

It felt like we had stepped into a VIP village; lined with rows of exclusive beach clubs, it had a buzz that radiated glamour.

La Serena is a paradise for interior design enthusiasts, boasting an array of sculptures and artwork created by various resident artists. The artistic flair extends from the impressive wine cellar to modern seating areas adorned with gingham umbrellas.

The hotel's chic atmosphere extends to the lavish bar and restaurant, which boasts a menu of delectable dishes and an irresistible cocktail selection.

Travelling around Forte dei Marmi is simplified by the cycle path that stretches along the beachfront. The vibrant bikes outside La Serena are not just for decoration - they're available for rent.

We chose electric bikes, which turned out to be a game-changer, particularly when manoeuvring through the town centre where parking can be tricky.

Forte dei Marmi presents a variety of stunning beach clubs, each with stylish sunbathing decks and opulent restaurants. We reserved lunch at Gilda one day, where the fashionable decor and fresh seafood were heavenly.

A local market in Forte dei Marmi, operating every Wednesday and Saturday, provides more than just your typical market experience. Anticipate high-quality Italian linens and leathers at reasonable prices.

The clothing was first-rate and we managed to secure a few gems. It's a welcome contrast from the surrounding high-end designer stores, but this market, along with a few more budget-friendly boutiques, ensures there's something to cater to any shopper's budget.

When in Italy, it's essential to ask locals for their favourite pizza place recommendations. Heeding their advice, we took a 15-minute drive to Pizzeria Pizzarda in the neighbouring town, Seravezza.

The establishment radiates a warm, familial atmosphere, and patrons can observe the pizzas being expertly prepared. The locals' recommendations were spot on; the homemade sauces and dough were outstanding, culminating in some of the most delectable pizzas we've ever savoured.
