One of the aspects of moving to Greece that came as a shock to British expats was the weather - apparently, it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Expats who live in Greece have revealed their biggest regrets about leaving the UK.

Speaking on YouTube channel SUNPIRE, they explained that those who wish to leave the UK need to make sure their finances are in order.

They said: "Relying on the local economy, not being financially prepared or not having a backup plan can cause serious trouble. Make sure to sort out your finances before making a big decision.

"It is worth keeping in mind that what you plan before moving here might not be what actually happens when you're here. Have a backup plan, have some savings."

Another aspect of moving to Greece that came as a shock to the expats was the weather.

Greece is famous for its hot weather, but the picturesque scenes are not constant all year round.

The expats added: "If you expect Greece to be hot and sunny all year round, let me tell you, it's not going to happen.

"Winters can be mild compared to other countries, but it can get chilly so you definitely need some sort of [heating device].

"Don't have the false impression that it's always 30°C. In the winter, it is not. It will be cold and you need to be prepared for that."

As of May 2024, there are around 17,000 British expats living in Greece.

The most popular parts of the country are Athens, Thessaloniki, Santorini, and Mykonos.

After Brexit, UK citizens can stay in Greece without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

In a recent YouTube clip titled "The Best Places to Live in Greece", UK nationals Tanya and Andy discussed some of the best places in Greece.

Andy said: "Twenty-four percent of people [in the poll] said Athens is the best place to live in Greece, of course, it’s the capital city and it’s got all of the famous Greek buildings in it.

“Number two is Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, it’s kind of relaxed, it’s got great cultural diversity, it got all the facilities and options that you could possibly imagine, and it’s on the coast.”
