An Italian town located just 42 miles away from a famous hotspot is among the best places to visit in October. Cefalù is a charming town on Sicily's northern coast, just outside Palermo.

Known for its stunning architecture, including the renowned cathedral with its intricate mosaics, and natural attractions like La Rocca, a striking rock formation offering panoramic views of the town and coastline, Cefalù is a must-visit destination.

To avoid peak crowds, the ideal time to visit is late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October) when the weather is pleasant.

The town has been named by the experts at Club Med who noted that there is a 65 percent increase in demand for Cefalù during September and October, as more travellers seek quieter, off-season getaways.

Cefalù's most famous landmark is its Norman cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which was built in the 12th century and features impressive mosaics and twin towers.

The historic centre of the town is filled with narrow, cobblestone streets, offering a glimpse into traditional Sicilian life.

Visitors can also explore ancient ruins, including remnants of Roman baths and medieval structures.

The town's sandy beach, situated against the backdrop of the historic centre, is a major draw for tourists looking to enjoy the Mediterranean Sea.

With its blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and lively atmosphere, Cefalù is an ideal destination for travellers seeking a mix of relaxation and exploration.

Travellers who have been to the hidden gem shared their experiences on TripAdvisor travel forum - and everyone has the same thing to say.

One user said: “We loved Cefalu. So glad we stayed two nights as opposed to one - we almost wish we did a third. The beach was wonderful - sandy and calm waters.

"We also hiked to the top of La Rocca - a beautiful hike, worth going all the way up for the views and to see the ancient sites.

"We also loved the little town for shopping and dining. Here, you will find higher-quality shops for gifts and take-home items.

"They had great Sicilian restaurants, and the Duomo and Piazza were lovely to enjoy at night for a drink, gelato, or people-watching. We enjoyed this so much more than Siracusa."

A second user said: "Çefalu is delightful. A very laid-back atmosphere. Beautiful views of the coastline and a beautiful little town.

"Plenty of places to have a drink and eat and many restaurants with sea views. Well worth a trip if you're based in Palermo."

A third user chimed in: "We loved Cefalu. It is a nice seaside town with plenty of food options, shopping and steeped in history.

"Locals are friendly and it’s a great place to watch the world go by. It’s incredibly hot and crowded in August but when you’re on holiday it doesn’t seem to bother you.

"We would definitely stay in Cefalu again if given the opportunity."
