The Red Devils have struggled to hit the ground running under Jose Mourinho this term as they sit seventh in the league - six points adrift of leaders Manchester City.
At this stage last term, United had five more points with Louis van Gaal in charge than they do now.
United have suffered three defeats already this season in the league, and Mourinho suffered his heaviest defeat in the Premier League when his side were thumped 4-0 by Chelsea on Sunday.
Danny Mills reckons these three players are the biggest names at Manchester United
Several of his players came in for criticism for their display and questions have been asked over the quality of their squad.
And Mills reckons only David De Gea, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba are worthy of staking a claim in a top team.
"They've been very poor. Their recruitment has been poor, it's left them in a difficult state," Mills said.
"How many of those United players would get into the top five or six sides?
Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard aren't consistent enough, claims Danny Mills

"Pogba? Yes, I still think Zlatan would get in and also De Gea. Apart from that, I don't think there's many.
"[Marcus] Rashford is a great emerging talent, but he's not consistent; [Jesse] Lingard is a great emerging talent, but he's not consistent."
United will hope to get back to winning ways when they host Manchester City in the fourth round of the EFL Cup tomorrow night (8pm).
