Tottenham begin talks over £16.4m defender deal
TOTTENHAM have opened talks with Jan Vertonghen over a new £16.4million contract, according to reports.
Jan Vertonghen joined Tottenham from Ajax in 2012
Vertonghen is currently sidelined with a knee injury but has been impressive for Mauricio Pochettino's side this season.
The 28-year-old has formed an excellent partnership with Toby Alderweireld in the heart of the Spurs defence.
And according to Football Insider Spurs want to offer the former Ajax captain a new four-and-a-half-year deal worth 70,000-a-week.
The Belgium international's current deal with the north London club expires in the summer of 2018, but he now looks set to be awarded a new deal.
Vertonghen signed from Ajax for £12million in the summer of 2012 and has made 156 appearances for Spurs, scoring eight goals.
In his first full season in the Premier League, he was named in the PFA Team of the year alongside Rio Ferdinand, Leighton Baines and Pablo Zabaleta in defence.
