Roberto Firmino, the former Liverpool star now playing for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, was denied a second league win of the season on Friday when Sadio Mane's team scored a last-minute equaliser. Firmino looked set to secure three points for his side in an away game against Al-Nassr, but a last-minute own goal resulted in a draw.

Both Firmino and Mane played the full 90 minutes but neither managed to score during the 1-1 draw. If Al-Ahli had held on, it would have been a surprising victory against a team expected to challenge Al-Hilal for the Saudi Pro League title.

Despite the disappointment of this match, Firmino is regularly starting games and has become a key player for his team. This is a contrast to last season when he lost his place in seven consecutive league games between November and December.

There were reports last year that Steven Gerrard might try to bring Firmino to Al-Ettifaq, the club he manages, to reunite him with his former Liverpool teammate Gini Wijnaldum.

Gerrard has heaped praise on Roberto Firmino amidst transfer speculation, saying: "I obviously know Bobby extremely well, I've been a massive fan. I've followed him for years. At the moment, he's Al-Ahli's player, so it's very difficult for me to comment on that situation. But I've loved Bobby Firmino since the first day I watched him and I'm a huge fan."

Meanwhile, Sadio Mane's rumoured switch back to European football with Besiktas fell through as the Turkish transfer window slammed shut on Friday night without a deal being struck.
