Mark Sampson eyes 'champions of Europe' title as England gear up for Germany in World Cup
ENGLAND's women will be aiming to end 31 years of hurt when they take on Germany in tonight's World Cup third place play-off at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium.
Mark Sampson is looking to mastermind a first England women's win over Germany since 1984
In 20 games against the Germans stretching back to August 1984, England have lost 18 and never won. But three days after falling at the semi-final stage in the cruellest of fashions, Laura Bassett's freak own goal in stoppage time handing Japan a 2-1 victory, Mark Sampson's team are ready to end their German jinx.
"This team won't need any extra motivation," he said. "It's England v Germany and it's our determination to go and do something we've never done before.
"We can't win the world title, so this is the next best thing. We'll look at it as a champions of Europe match."
Kick-off: 9pm. TV: BBC3.
