Kris Commons bagged Celtic's winner against Zagreb[PA]
Commons’ brilliantly worked move with Anthony Stokes in six minutes ended with last season’s top scorer firing home a low drive to give the Hoops their first win in Group D.
But the Croatian champions will wonder how they managed to draw a blank in a tie where they had enough chances to win 10 games.
Keeper Craig Gordon was the local hero with a string of top-class saves – Wilson Eduardo having his heart broken on numerous occasions by the in-form Scot.
The roar at the final whistle was more in relief than joy as Celtic joined Salzburg on top of Group D with four points from two games.
Celtic’s next match is at home to rock-bottom Romanians Astra, who last night crashed 2-1 to Salzburg despite taking an early lead.
Gordon was "delighted", on both a personal and team level.
The former Sunderland and Hearts stopper, signed as a replacement for Fraser Forster this summer, said: "I'm delighted with that.
"It's only the third clean sheet since joining the club and let's hope we can continue that.
"They're always special occasions, European nights, and it's a great three points. We needed that."
