Tottenham announce 13 departures and confirm £21m transfer as Postecoglou begins clearout
Tottenham have released 13 players
Tottenham have opted not to sign out-of-favour forward Timo Werner after confirming his return to RB Leipzig - however, a £21m deal to bring in Austrian international Kevin Danso will be officially finalised on Sunday.
Spurs had the opportunity to purchase the German international for £8.5m at the conclusion of his loan, but this option has not been exercised, with the Europa League champions listing him as one of six senior players leaving the club. Werner, 29, failed to find the back of the net in 18 league appearances this season and was sidelined for a significant portion of the campaign due to a hamstring injury. He leaves having scored three goals in all competitions across 41 appearances over a season and a half.
Goalkeepers Fraser Forster, 37, and Alfie Whiteman, 26, are both set to be released at the end of their contracts this month, while left-back Sergio Reguilon, 28, will also become a free agent.
Forster joined Spurs in the summer of 2022 following several years at Southampton and played in the early stages of their Europa League victory. Academy graduate Whiteman made just a single first-team appearance, while Reguilon departs after a five-year spell that included loan stints at Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Brentford.
Welsh defender Ben Davies' contract also expires on June 30, but he may yet sign a new deal amid interest from Championship newcomers Wrexham, while the future of Mathys Tel remains uncertain.
He joined on loan from Bayern Munich in January, with the deal including an option to purchase the France U21 forward for £50m. Tottenham have also confirmed that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's loan move to Marseille will be made permanent.
Danso's loan from RC Lens will be transformed into a permanent transfer to north London, costing around £21m as per the conditions of his loan agreement.
The 26-year-old featured in 10 Premier League matches last season and was brought on as a late substitute when Spurs triumphed over Manchester United in the Europa League final.
Spurs are still deliberating whether to retain Ange Postecoglou as head coach following their European victory and a disappointing Premier League season marked by 22 losses.
The club announced that youth team players Will Andiyapan, Archie Baptiste, Jahziah Linton, Maxwell McKnight, Max Robson, Jaden Williams, Elliot Krasniqi, Timileyin Adekunle, Dante Orr and Charlie Warren will all depart when their contracts expire.
