Jurgen Klopp previously criticised Manchester United's handling of Jadon Sancho, insisting that a manager must support his players rather than discard them as "useless".

Sancho's future was a hot topic leading up to this summer after he found his stride again at Borussia Dortmund last season on loan, playing a key role in their journey to the Champions League final.

This resurgence followed a public disagreement with Erik ten Hag, when Sancho hit back at Ten Hag after being omitted from a matchday squad 12 months ago. This led to the winger being exiled at the club, before he was welcomed back into the first-team fold this summer after his spell at Dortmund.

However, a deadline day move to Chelsea appears to have concluded his stint at Old Trafford. The £72million star has moved to west London on loan, with their Premier League rivals having an obligation to buy the English star.

Sancho's rollercoaster spell in Manchester has come to an end, but Klopp previously claimed more backing was due before his sale.

Before the transfer was finalised, the former Liverpool manager remarked at the end of last season: "If the whole world loses trust and faith in the player, the manager has to be the one behind the player. I cannot just buy into that 'he's useless,' like other clubs did by the way - buying a player for £80 million and then sending him out on loan!"

Sancho has parted ways with Manchester United after scoring just 12 goals. The winger, who lost his place in the England team following his Premier League return, is now on a mission to reignite his career at Chelsea, despite the fierce competition for starting spots.

United's sporting director Dan Ashworth justified Sancho's departure, citing the squad's attacking depth as the reason for giving the green light on the move. With Ten Hag leaving Sancho out of this season's matchday squads, it was clear he faced limited opportunities for playtime.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Ashworth explained: "I think with any player, whether it's Jadon, whether it's Scott [McTominay] or whether it's Aaron [Wan-Bissaka], if there's a preference that they would like to move and go to a new club and it's right for them and it's right for us, then you have to explore it.

"We felt we had enough depth in that particular position to be able to cover it, we've got four really good wide players, Jadon was a fifth, and it just enabled us to make that decision. If it was good for him and good for us it was something we were willing to consider."
