England face UEFA punishment after breaching rules in Slovenia Euro 2024 draw

England could be penalised by UEFA because of the irate reactions of some fans to their 0-0 Euro 2024 draw with Slovenia on Tuesday night.

Three other countries participating in the tournament have already been reprimanded for similar behaviour from their supporters.

Despite an uninspired performance against a team currently ranked 57th in the world rankings, the Three Lions managed to secure top spot in Group C to qualify for the round of 16.

Key players including Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden displayed a lacklustre performance puzzling many.

Gareth Southgate's desperate attempts to revive his struggling team during the second half led him to bring on Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Anthony Gordon for fresh legs but it did not result in a goal.

Southgate was observed applauding the fans in Cologne after the game. Although he was followed by the remaining players, the angered spectators voiced their disappointment through booing and by launching plastic cups towards the manager.

Expressing understanding towards the fan's reactions, Southgate said: "I understand the narrative towards me.

"That's better for the team than it being towards them. But it's creating an unusual environment to operate in. I've not seen any other team qualify and receive similar."

However, the hostile reception from the fans could potentially result in disciplinary action against the FA.

UEFA have clamped down on misconduct, imposing fines on Albania, Serbia, and Croatia for fan disturbances during the tournament.

Albania faced a €12,375 penalty for object-throwing breaches under Article 16(2)(b) DR in their clash with Italy in Dortmund, as part of a raft of sanctions that also addressed fireworks, pitch invasions, and provocative banners.

Serbia were hit with a €4,500 fine due to their supporters throwing objects during the England game, while Croatian fans' firework antics against Albania resulted in a €10,500 fine.

Further repercussions may loom for Croatia after incidents involving plastic cups thrown onto the pitch in their Italy match, sparking talks of a potential UEFA alcohol ban in stadiums to curb such incidents.

Discussing the fan situation on BBC Radio Five Live, Southgate remarked: "I get it that they are not happy with me, that is the reality, I am not going to back away from that. I need them behind the team.

"I have to deal with what I am dealing with. I was not going to back away from going over to thank people for coming and giving the support that they did, but I know that this is causing an issue for the group.

"I can deal with that but I need them to support the players. The more the fans are like they were in the second half, behind the team it is a massive lift for them, because we are operating in a very, very unusual environment."
