Manchester United bosses were reportedly on the brink of giving Erik ten Hag his marching orders and appointing a new manager for the upcoming season, but financial constraints turned potential replacements away.

Despite leading United to a remarkable 13th FA Cup victory last month, Ten Hag's tenure has been marred by a lacklustre season that saw the club finish in eighth place - their worst-ever Premier League standing.

This prompted a thorough post-season review by the club's hierarchy. The current United boss was left in limbo as the club engaged in discussions with other prospective managers, weighing up all possible alternatives.

However, various financial issues, ranging from transfer budgets to salary expectations, proved to be stumbling blocks for some candidates.

According to The Times, one manager shortlisted by United was "astounded" by the low wages offered for the role. Another was reportedly "unimpressed" by the limited funds available for player transfers.

Thomas Tuchel, the former Chelsea manager, was among those considered for the position. However, he fell out of favour after the club decided he wasn't the right fit. Tuchel had plans to bring in ex-Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger from Real Madrid to bolster the defence.

However, due to Rudiger's age, asking price, and apparent dissatisfaction, he was ruled out as an option. Consequently, Tuchel's proposals were reportedly dismissed by United's sporting operations chief, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Mauricio Pochettino and Brentford's Thomas Frank were also in the running for the Manchester United job.

However, Brentford denied receiving any communication from United regarding Frank, and there were questions over whether the club would be willing to pay his hefty release clause.

Similar reasons were given for not pursuing Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, who previously served as an assistant to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick at United.

The Times reported that Sir Dave Brailsford was a key advocate for Ten Hag to remain in his role at United.

Following a board review, the Dutchman will stay on at the club, with talks underway to extend his contract. It expires next year, although the club do hold an option to extend it for a further 12 months.
