Erik ten Hag has reportedly requested that his coach Benni McCarthy is offered a new contract, after the Dutchman’s future was resolved late on Tuesday evening. Ten Hag will remain in charge at Old Trafford despite speculation that new decision-makers INEOS were considering swinging the axe.

And with Ten Hag set to enter contract negotiations as his current deal is up at the end of next season, though there is an option to extend by a further year, he wants his support staff to enjoy the same level of stability.

McCarthy joined United with Ten Hag in 2022 and was credited with turning around Marcus Rashford’s career in the South African coach’s first year at the club. He has closely worked with Rasmus Hojlund over the past season and is thought to be a positive influence behind the scenes at the Carrington training ground complex.

The Times claim that Ten Hag wants United to hand McCarthy a contract extension as a reward for his efforts over the past two years, with his current deal up at the end of June.

The former Blackburn and West Ham striker’s own future had been in doubt, with INEOS weighing up whether to sack Ten Hag and replace him with candidates involving Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino, who would likely have made sweeping changes to the existing staff.

McCarthy himself has eyes on a managerial position in the future, having led Cape Town City and AmaZulu in his homeland before linking up with Ten Hag at United.

When asked by South African radio station 947 whether he would be interested in taking the top job at his boyhood club Kaizer Chiefs last month, McCarthy replied: "Definitely. I want to coach, I want to manage and I'm itching to do it.

"I've learned a lot in my two years working at Man United, working with Erik - he's one of the smartest managers I've seen. Not many coaches in the world say no to institutions.

"Man United, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich are institutions. I think Kaizer Chiefs, you can safely say it's also an institution. It's a great club, one that I'll always have a lot of love for because it's my local team that I supported as a kid. If the opportunity arises, of course you would have to sit down and think about it because you don't say no to institutions."

McCarthy is currently weighing up his options according to SNL24, having attracted admirers from MLS following rave reviews during his time in Manchester, which has seen Ten Hag go to bat for the coach but it remains to be seen whether United and McCarthy are also interested in a contract extension.
