John Ward
Former Cheltenham and Carlisle boss John Ward, 59, was assistant to Aidy Boothroyd at the Community Stadium and becomes Colchester's third manager in little over nine months after Paul Lambert quit to join Norwich back in August and Boothroyd moved to Coventry a fortnight ago.
First-team coach Joe Dunne has been named as Ward's No2.
Ward's first act as new boss has been to offer a contract to rookie midfielder Sam Corcoran.
Corcoran, 19, was released by Boothroyd last month but Ward said: "I've called Sam and offered him another year's contract.
"He has an opportunity to progress and I want youth to flourish here - and he can develop."
