The Times claim club owners, the Glazers, have ordered an improved attempt to lure ex-Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane to Old Trafford.
Zidane has reservations over moving to England midway through the season after leaving Real at the end of last season.
But United are set to intensify their bid to recruit the 49-year-old as Solskjaer's replacement in the coming days.
The three-time Champions League-winning manager could be tempted by an increased financial package but would leave United panicking if he rejects a deal again as the fixtures keep coming.
