United opted to play Paul Pogba in their midfield for the 4-2 defeat to Leicester.
After he’d flourished in that position for France in their Nations League triumph over Spain, it seemed a shrewd move.
However, like with Maguire, that decision backfired.
Pogba doesn’t convince in that position, with the 28-year-old still fighting to achieve consistency five years after his return from Juventus.
Given Solskjaer’s admiration for Scott McTominay and Fred, either player could be selected. Or both, if Nemanja Matic is deemed only suitable for the bench.
The Independent delivered some surprising team news on Tuesday.
It was stated that Bruno Fernandes could be dropped, despite being the shining light in Saturday’s defeat.
Fernandes created more chances than any player that day but, with just one goal to his name since the 4-1 hammering of Newcastle in September, Solskjaer may roll the dice.
If the 27-year-old does drop to the bench, then Jesse Lingard may come in.
The England international’s time at Old Trafford looks to be winding down but, given Solskjaer’s determination to keep him, he may be in line for some much-needed minutes.
