Guardiola is claimed to not have ultimate faith in defensive duo Aymeric Laporte and John Stones.
"Speaking to sources at the club, they have opted to strengthen from a position of strength," McGarry said on the Transfer Window podcast.
"Therefore they have identified, and Guardiola has asked for, a striker, a central defender, and also left-back.
"Now particularly of interest here is the central-defending point, because obviously City have spent in excess of £150million on central defenders and are now definitely trying to sell one [Laporte], and marketing him aggressively in European football, and also despite the fact he's currently starring for England in the Euros, not necessarily confident about another [Stones]."
