Liverpool handed transfer deadline day boost by Nat Phillips’ ‘capable’ defending
Jurgen Klopp has suffered injuries to numerous key defenders, but Nat Phillips impressed against West Ham with rumours around a move for Preston's Ben Davies surfacing
With Joel Matip and Fabinho both on Liverpool’s treatment table, Jurgen Klopp was forced to turn to his 12th central defensive partnership in 21 Premier League games against West Ham. That meant Nat Phillips and Jordan Henderson were charged with keeping Michail Antonio quiet.

Klopp has repeatedly spoken of his desire to bring in an experienced defender before the January transfer window closes tomorrow, with players such as Dayot Upamecano and Shkodran Mustafi both linked with moves to Anfield.
When asked of the possibility of adding a defender before tonight’s 11pm deadline, Klopp said: “We will try.
“It is funny when you all think 'oh Liverpool will be just fine with the situation and they don't care or try'. We try but there is nothing to say until something happens.
“We will see. We still try to do the right things. If that's possible, we will do it. If not, we won't.”

Phillips has been shaky at times when called upon by Klopp, particularly against Newcastle United.
But the 23-year-old impressed against West Ham, with Jamie Redknapp hailing the youngster in his half-time analysis on Sky Sports.
Highlighting a West Ham free kick in the first period, Redknapp said: “He [Phillips] is the only one who follows the line and it’s a really good header.
“He’s done ever so well. He’s matched him [Antonio] and had a really good 45 minutes.”
Phillips also showed his aerial ability against the strong Antonio and proved he can be a reliable choice at the back should Liverpool fail to bring in defensive reinforcements.
